Hi Everyone!
I searched before making this post I'm hoping my question hasn't been posted before since I couldn't find my answers I'm making my 1st post. I have a 97 gsx auto w/ 65k on it bought the vehicle w/57k. I only have done the cone filter as a mod. Anyways, I'm starting to mod my vehicle slowly but surely. Most of my mods have been aimed at replacing old parts w/ better parts. I've done a lot of research on mods however it seems that IPT is THE place to go for automatic tranny upgrades are there other options or is IPT's reputation pretty good. What mods do I need to do to my tranny or should I spend the 3 G's and get the new tranny from IPT. I've asked my mechanic who specializes in DSM's however he doesn't know much about upgrading an auto. Also, when launching my car I powerbrake to the 3500 rpm mark drop my gear in low w/ the od off. Then I shift to 2nd at 6000 rpm's, shift again in 'D' at 6000 rpm's and hit 'OD' again at 6000. It seems to work for me however does anyone have a better way to launching their automatic? Thank You for your help.

Thats the same way i use to launch my NT DSM Auto and it seemed to work pretty well but i've been told by people that manual shifting of an auto trans is really hard on it. Something to do with the way the clutches in the auto trans spin up before shifting.
which makes it jerk into gear manual shifting.
Which twards then end of owning my car the tranny didn't shift as well.
I sure wish they made a tiptronic tranny for the 2G cars that would be awesome.

I timed it once at the best time i got with that car keep in mind it's a N/T was to stick it in low, power brake then just keep the hammer down once the car red lines in low gear it will force its self to shift.
I found doing this it shifted at a high RPM.
But remember this is VERY hard on the tranny. least thats what my mechanic told me.
Best way to launch and not kill your tranny is to stick it in drive with the O/D off and hammer it down.

doesn't ipt have a product that you can flip switches to control the shifting of an auto. I wonder if there are problems with that.

wow thats really cool.
i was thinkin of doing a manual swap but this might be less headache

I'm not sure which route to go actually with mods to my tranny. I do alot of research before I do any mods however it seems that info is few and far between when it comes to auto tranny mods. What would be a good 1st mod to my auto tranny? A high stall torque converter? A final drive gear? A valve body? Better trans cooler? Or just ship my tranny to IPT and spend the 3 G's+ to have the tranny rebuilt? What do you guys think. Thx

I would think a good tranny cooler would be a sound investment. That was going to be mine before I ran into other issues that set the money back.

Having an auto GSX can be a very good thing. Get yourself a good high stall Tq converter for better launches. You'll be able to brake torqe at a higher RPM. Also, being auto you'll cut more consistent times than manual cars, which is great for bracket racing. You also don't have to lift off of the throttle to shift, so you'll stay in boost constantly. Use this to your advantage.

If you don't have a tranny cooler, let your car cool between every couple of launches. The main cause for auto transmission failure is heat.

What would I look for when choosing a tq converter? Would I go with one from IPT or elsewhere. Also I believe there is a stock tranny cooler as well.

Okay well i have a stage 3 shift kit and thats about it, how much hp can the stock auto tranny hold. I heard stories of 300-400hp. Also what would i need to add if i wanted it to handle 300awhp?
