I'm interested in building an Autocross car. Only looking for your choice and a quick reason why. Thanks

I'd first plan how much work you are ready to put into this, which determines the category, which determines my answer.

Stock: something else
ST: something else
SP: 2G AWD (ACM and Fedja have a shot again this year, assuming it doesn't break)
SM: something else
P: something else
M: something else

In other words, the only category where I'd start with a DSM (if serious) is Street Prepared. Set-up would include one to two thousand in suspension, another one and a half to two on wheels and tires, another thousand on the engine (IC and DSM Link), and a final thousand on the interior (seats and wheel). Send me a PM if you'd rather just start with a car that's ready to go (albeit in SM).

I sold my 1g a long time ago. I'm considering DSMs again for the purpose of an Autocross car.

A 2g will be a better start than a 1g.

What class are you wanting to run in? (ie, how much money do you want to spend to be competitive)

My 2g has somewhere around $10-12k in mods, ~330-375hp (depending on where I set it), and runs with the top times of my club. But if I had to do it all over again I dont know if I would start with a DSM.

Cars that top my list of what I would want to try and build are a 70-72 240z, Older MR2 SC, newer MR2 Turbo, Evo (duh), Z06.

Any of those have at least the same potential as a DSM.

74 Chevette for SM... FTW!

ps. I forgot to include $3000 in diffs for an ESP (or higher) DSM

I was thinking maybe ST to SP but no higher.

The most attracitve cars to me because of their base price are

1g
2g
Foxbody
Fbody
C4

You want a cheap car that's fun to drive in ST and can be upgraded later for SM? Get an old Civic.

If its not turbo AWD, it will have to be RWD, that's just my personal preference.

What about the mazda miata? It seems everytime I flip though an issue of Grass Roots there is some article about auto cross and the miata.

Meh, underpowered cars are kinda boring to drive. In a miata, or any other car for that matter, its all about being smooth.

I find having to actually worry about my speed is more fun. Trying to tame a ~350hp car and hold it at the limit is what gets me exited about auto-x. Ive driven and ridden in lower powered but competitive cars and theyre quick, but just not nearly as fun for me.

Fox mustang? IMO, your better off with a 2g.

id say stick with what ya got or buy a miata, cause they are cheap and you can throw those things around an autoX course

Sorry to ask another question in your thread, but this kind of falls in line with the topic and probably doesn't deserve a thread of its' own.

So, I was wondering what class could you run in a DSM and still maintain a decent everyday driver (outside of stock of course), and how much cash would that take?

I run SM and drive my car daily, as long as you keep up with the maintenance IE fluid changes, etc, you'll be fine. and im somewhat competitive in my class in the region I race in.

2g in stx would be an underdog (vs wrx and bmw) but the prep would be
8" wide rims max
245 street tires (245/40/17 yoko neova is top choice)
coilovers
sway bars
front negative camber via upper arm offset/eccentric bushings and shortened (custom cut/weld) upper arms
intake (k&n)
exhaust w/ cat

really depends on your budget and priorities (winning vs bang for buck, daily driving, etc). For dsm, 2g > 1g in autox.

If you have the money get a EVO

I have both a 1g and a EVO and the EVO is a great auto X car just to start with you can run a lot of years on a car like that with out having to mod the car much but when you are ready to mod. your money will go a long ways.

The Civic's and VW's do good to if you want to play with FWD

Before the "take-back" on IC piping and CBVs, 2Gs held their own in STX. But as soon as Andy Hollis and friends made us put the stock upper IC pipe and CBV back on, we couldn't keep up. In short: I agree.

I really dont get why they would do that, look at how much it hani caps the car

They just give the upper hand to somone else, it really didnt balance it out then?

Yes SCCA hates DSM's... just buy a lambo... jk. the SCCA is cool.....

i've reprepped my talon for stx and plan to take on boosted wrx's.
Gave up racing an stu m3 against boosted sti/evos on low grip asphalt lots near san fran.
