I have a 98 spyder gs with 130k miles on. I bought the car in April and everything ran fine. A few months ago the transmission started to not shift. At all. I did research and a lot of people were saying that it is probably a bad input/output speed censor. I went ahead and replaced it and the car ran fine for a week or so. After that, the transmission start to not shift again. It sat after that until now. Today I come to find out that the battery is completely dead. I knew it was bad before but I didn't think anything of it. Is there anything else that could be wrong to make it not shift or could it be that the bad battery was causing it? I have no experience working with cars so I'm sorry if I sound stupid.

Low or old transmission fluid can cause harsh shifts or slipping. You would have to be real low for it not to.shift at all. As far as your batter being bad yes it could cause transmission problems. Batterys cause wierd things to happen once they start dieing. Any check engine lights? Could be low line pressure, bad shift solenoids, dirty fluid. I would point torwards the battery first. You have to.replace it anyways mine as well start their.

I am replacing the battery this weekend. Yes, I do have a check engine light and I ran it at Advanced Auto Parts and it came up as the censors. After we replaced them, it came back on after a few hours. I'm going to take it back as soon as I get the new battery in.

Trannie's internal fluid pump could be going out ...

130K on a Mitsu F4A33 automatic is about right when the begin to fail and go into limp mode - which spells rebuild.

What would an average cost for a cheap rebuild be? And how hard being someone who has little knowledge. I'm looking to fix it and sell it. Also, the tranny looks like it has foam around it. Could that be that somebody did a crappy rebuild already?

Any automatic rebuild is going to be close to a thousand due to so many components inside to operate the unit - not a task for a beginner up to a novice.

Now, if you weren't going into OD, then doing the end clutches aren't too bad to do and tranny can stay installed.

If it was a 5 speed - be tons cheaper due to less rotating parts.

Go get quotes and ideas from tranny shops.

Good Luck - DSM

A little off topic but like I said, I just want to fix and sell. Afterwards I'm looking at a 5 speed gst. Would it be cheaper and easier to just do a manual swap or is that much harder and more expensive? I'm assuming much harder and more expensive but I don't know.

if the trans filter was never changed it could clog up and cause the trans not to shift .if the fluid doesn't smell burnt then try that first.
