Edmonton,
Hi all, I'm brand new here (well, sorta)!! And I have a very noobish question which i'm sure hasn't been covered yet... Anywho, what sort of performance difference (stock to stock) am i looking at between an AWD TSi 5 speed and an AWD TSi auto??? I'm kinda hoping its not too huge of a difference, because i found a sweet auto TSi for cheap, but if the performance difference is huge i'll keep searching for a 5 speed... Anywho, that's about all, thanks for any help!!!

P.S. the Talon i'm looking at is a 2g... which leads me to a second question, is there much of a dif with the 1g's??

other than the tranny??? i'm assuming this means that the auto will stand up BETTER than the std will... because i used to have a 95 ESi and the clutch blew at the drop of a pin... is that wutcha mean?

1. There is not much of a performance difference between autos and manuals of the 95-99 DSMs. I wouldnt buy an auto becuase i like to have more control over the vehicle.

2. 1g cars have lower compression, beefier internals, and a stronger crank than the 2g cars (especially the eariler years with the 6-bolt motor) but in the stock form are supposed to have 190 hp on manual cars. The auto 1gs come with less power due to a crappier turbo (13g) with smaller injectors. 2g cars are an acclaimed 210 hp but run nearly equivalent times to their predecessors due to weight differences. Also the 1st gen manual cars come with a better flowing turbo than the 2g cars. The 1st gen turbo is a mitsu 14b while the 2nd gen stock is garrett t-25.

all of this information of course, is only referring to the turbo models.

I am just speculating but i think a more important difference is the number of gears and the gear ratios in the cars.

If it's AWD and clean, grab it. If you wind up hating the automatic that much, swapping to a manual isn't insurmountable.

If it's FWD, and you're not sure what you want, try it and see.

I think there's many advantages to automatics in the real world, but I'm old. So, either I might know better, or I might just be old. Some things are more cool than being cool.

if i got bigger injectors for a 13g i would need a ecu from a manual? i read that somewhere but doesnt the auto tranny run off the ecu?

The only thing i'm really worrying about with the auto, is that its not going to downshift when i want etc... So, one more question: would it be classified as a "racing or performance inspired" auto, or is it going to be a pieca crap for racing?

Just remember with the auto you can launch with boost and you wont lose any boost between shifts, plus your going to be consistent with your times, as with a 5spd you might miss a shift. And if you live in high traffic areas they make better daily drivers than a 5spd with a 2600 killing your left leg. But i wouldnt get an auto for road racing, thats just silly.

Why does this have to be SO hard?!!? that's what i was actually thinking too, with an auto you can get consistent times, BUT standards are SO fun to drive damnit!!! what would you guys do??? wait for the 5 spd to come along, or pick up this pimp auto now?

Get what you will be satisfied with. There are a lot of auto's putting down good times at the tracks so they can be built to hang with the manuals.

auto + torque converter = :thumb:

+ shift kit

i have an auto
barely had her for a few months and well i dont mind her not being stick

and as far as building it up to keep up with a manual well its the same exact engine look at what you have to upgrade anyway

injectors << you pretty much have to do this anyway even with the 450's if not a set of 450's are dirt cheap
turbo << most people upgrade this anyway
cams << im not to sure about it but if you get the stock manual ones for cheap your set or upgrade

im sure i missed something but those are the only differences on the engine besides who keeps their car stock anyway

A torque converter basically takes the place of a clutch system, so to simply put it it's responsible for transfering torque to the wheels.Check the parts catalog here for prices.

Personally, i'd never buy an auto for my 'fun' car. I just enjoy the rhythms and the sounds of shifting the gears myself too much.

However, I have considered getting a second auto car for commutes and such.

Aint nothin as sweet as downshiftin when you want to, lettin your sweet melody exhaust play and just listerning to that deceleration sound......Standard tranny rules. ofcoz you`d have to stop and put your car in neutral if you want to mess with your exhaust drivin an automatic.

Talk about savin gas...i am not sure if you can cruize 5th gear goin 30m/h or less on an automatic. :thumb: What about waitin at the line with your RPMs where you want them before launch?I mean without causin damage by pushing the brakes at the same time
