Limit of the std computer

Hey guys,
Having a debate here and thought I'd get some more opinions. When does the standard computer become obsolite?
In this instance we're talking a 2.3L with larger turbo, cams and associated supporting mods. One persons theory is that a chip to compensate for the injectors and play with the timing and fuel will be sufficient, whereas I dont think a chip can fine tune enough and for 400awhp, an emanage (or similar fuel/timing piggy-back) would be a minimum.

Whats everyones thoughts?

im not sure if the vr4 uses the same ecu tho. pretty sure it does but you might ask the guys at dsmlink just to make sure. i would know for certain but there really arent enought vr4's floating around to have extra ecus out there very often
