Are the myths true

I've herd that stock 2nd Gen turbo eclipses are not so reliable. And also that they arent worth buying over 100K.

Is this True/False

AS long as the car has been taken care of then they can be reliable. I bought my 95 GSX with 107k miles on it and have yet to have any problems with it and it now has 120k miles.

Just like any car if it's beaten on it will break more, if taken care of it will last longer

Well normally I would say my 95 has gone 111K on orignal motor with no motor work done...too bad a couple of weeks ago I found out its not the orignal motor.

I believe the problem you are referring to that makes 2G "unreliable" is crankwalk. A issue that maybe 10% of 2G owners experience. Its not as common as this board puts it out to be.

It just all depends on how the car is treated.

It was a good question if you ask me...just give an answer, he isn't looking for any petty comments.

And to answer you question Clipz, many say they are unreliable. I don't have one so I won't go there but from what I hear from friends and peep's on the boards is that if you aren't good with cars you probably shouldn't get one just yet. Trannies are weak, the 2G motor is more capable of "walking" and some of the parts aren't exactly durable.

The more you mod it the more unreliable it can be. Don't mod if you don't have a clue about how a car works.

But there is also a good upside to the car. Looks(opinion),endless mods,huge power gains and not to mention they are pretty rare...at least around here.

And as for 100k miles, I would never buy one with that high mileage but it isn't necessarily a bad idea. If the car was cared for then it shouldn't be a problem. One of the best things to look for is to see if the owner replaced the belts. If not I would stay away.

Yah i was told about everything possible about these cars before i got one. Alot of mechanic friends told me it might be in the shop all the time because of the "interference" engine. Also was told by various people that "Turbo charged engines dont last past _____ number of miles" and so on. I got the car and 30,000 miles so far and not a damn thing wrong. Add general misconceptions along with "DSM specific things" like crankwalk in 2gs they get a bad rap. There a blast to drive and are cheap speed that looks good. Not much else on the road that has such a great package FOR THE MONEY. Just my .02

Also, there trannies arent that weak, combining modding w/ AWD drops and you see they are under alot more stress then your 140 ft/torque civic and such. The tranny has to take all of the force instaed of wheels spinning.

AND MODDING THEM DOES NOT UNDERMINE RELIABILITY,, IF DONE CORRECTLY, modding a DSM will not affect it's general relibilty much at all. There is obviously a point were it will as w/ all cars but the main reason probelms occur is people throwing parts on a car w/out maitenence or tuning. AND i have seen many DSMs w/ very high mileage do great at the track. I wouldn't be scared at all of 100,000 miles though a rebuild may be in the distant future.

Yah,like ckozlgod said, They aren't a car to just drive until something breaks like some people do w/ toyotas and such. I would only reccomend them to people that would do alot of their own work for at least the "little things". Mines been more reliable then my other cars but doing things like changing your own O2 sensor and such would be almost a nessicity. Unless you like paying expensive labor charges.

It is a tuner car. I agree that if you dont know how to work on cars, buy a Honda and never pop the hood... ever. If you want a car that is easy to work on, with tons of power to be had, and looks amazing, then consider it.
