BMW's come stock with them, it can't be illegal, unless they're red or green or something.

of course it can be illegal.

BMWs use them as a front facing parking light, but if tampering with the OEM headlamp is illegal in your state or county, they can be illegal.

Oh and jsut becasue it ISN'T illegal doesn't mean you won't get stopped for it cited for it or because of it.

Of course you have no business driving around with the halo on and the headlight off.

Hm. It's going to depend on where you are, and how cranky the specific cop is. For starters, it's illegal to run any lighting on a car that isn't DOT approved, and that has DOT molded into the lens. I believe there's similar rules about the SAE certification numbers as well. I don't know where angel eyes fit in. Running lights are legal, with rules about colors and locations, but halos "modify" a light and may be enough for an officer to make a stop on your car, and in some areas that can go on to include opening the hood and the crap that entails.
In California, it's illegal to move a vehicle with its parking lights on, yet DRLs are legal. There's no making sense of what legislators do to make money off fines.

You might check your state's vehicle code, or ask the watch officer at your local trooper post.

The LED halos from ebay are very weak and pathetic compared to the high output ones in BMWs. While ours cast a baleful and hardly noticable ring, the BMW ones are so bright that you can't really take a clear picture of them (anyone whose tried this with a digital camera would have noticed that the image always ends up with the lights blurred out, as if the car had its low-beams on).

Taking all that into account, and the fact that eclipses have only single halo lights available, you shouldnt have too much trouble with the cops. Obviously, don't be driving at night with just your fog lights wired, so that people can see your halos (lots of people do that, and that's why a lot get pulled over). If you look on EBay, you'll see that most of the housings are SAE and DOT approved, or so they say.
