Hey whats up everyone... well i was just wondering if im voiding my dealer warrenty because i took off my air box and replaced it with a K&N filter???? if u know anything about dealer warrenty or if im voiding it please let me know.... thanks

Did you take off the whole air box, or just the element? Call a guy in the parts department, he can help you.

Most of them wil be asses, so before you let them see it just put the stock back on. Only takes five seconds.

Honestly, it pretty much comes down to the Service Manager and whether he likes you or not.

Apparently, though, Mitsubishi service managers hate everyone. The stories I read on here are enough to make me think I'd never buy from Mitsubishi.

Many years ago, when I bought my first DSM a 1990 Talon tai awd, it came with a 7/70 warrenty. After owning it for three years, I was getting bored with its preformance, and decided to do a little playing. I was able to get the car into the 12.6 1/4 mile range, and was to the point where I had a HKS VPC, ECC, big 16G, I/C and what not. Still wanting more I decided to put Nitrous on the car, and started with a 50 shot, and it was good for a bout a week, then I went to 75, and so on ,and so on, well when I got to the 125 lecel number one piston decided it had had enough. Since the car was still under warrenty I called the dealer, and explaned to them that the car was now running very badily, and it was still under warrenty. They verified that it was in fact still under warrenty, and scheduled a date for me to drop the car off to them. Since this date was a week or so out, and thinking that they would not approve of the modifications, I spent the week returning the car to its stock form. When my day arrived I droped the car off. They called me a wek later to say the car was done, and that they had to replace the entire motor. Then he informed me that I had only to pay the $100 deductable as specified in the warrenty agreement. Everything above the $100 was covered under the warrenty. The only down side was that it took me another week to get all of the modifications back on my car.

I think that you all should now know how to make warrenty claimes.

It's assholes like you who ruin reasonable warranty work for the rest of us. Congratulations on defrauding Mitsubishi.

btw was that ^^^^^^^^^^^^ really neccasary? just cause he mods doesnt mean he's any more of an ass than anybody else. but thats besides the point. i am a nissan warranty administrator and i can attest to several suped up Z cars [fmic, t-88 turbo's, other stuff of that nature] coming in and still being covered under warranty. It all depends on the warranty admin NOT the service manager, writer, etc. if the admin is an asshole then you are screwed. if not, your fine. chances are if they tell you its out of warranty because you modded than that means they just dont want to run the claim and get paid. [we make commission on each line of each claim] its not to hard to push something through either all you need is a pfp [primary failed part], three C's [complaint, cause, correction] and the tech has to document what the three c's were, oh and the right operation code if the claim suspends, try another op code/pfp. if it suspends call the claims center for approval. easy as that [not really but, its not that hard] if they tell you that its not under warranty cause you mod tell them to take that stick outta their asses or youll contact mitsu headquarters. i know this for a fact! just last week we had a 04 350z with 15xxx miles come in because the 6speed trans was ####ed [bad synchros, we upgraded to the redesigned multicones], i called approvals right away, was authorized 2950.00 and we went to town on it. during the rnr [remove and replacement] of the trans, the customer requested us to put a NISMO flywheel, and clutch in that he had purchased, there was no labor charge because the trans was already out. we did and its fine. warranty still in tact, and everyones happy. just think about it, how is Mitsu/Nissan/ford whatever headquarters supposed to know if the car is modded or not hmmmm? we dont send pictures? they dont have a little box when we submit RO's asking if its modded, think about it. if your denied warranty then you got hosed!!!
later
kyle- :talon:

Ummm, okay. Another viewpoint. I work at a Mitsu dealer. I see a whole bunch of modded DSMs, Evos, 3KGT's come in. It doesn't matter how modded these cars are, if they need warranty work, they'll get it, as long as it isn't related to the failure. I'd like to witness a 300ZX with a T88 and nitrous getting a shortblock or tranny replaced under warranty. I'm not calling BS, I just think that is the exception and not the norm. Most people that come in with mods are treated pretty fairly IMO, but a lot of people come in with their dukes up ready for a fight and being asses about it and they get the same "kindness" returned to them. Then they get on internet forums and say "X dealership sux" or "I'll never buy an X car again." The bottom line is, powertrain mods void powertrain warranties. But if you need something else unrelated covered you are fine.

I have an extended warranty on my car. When my headgasket blew we tried to get the warranty company to cover it. They sent an inspector and he denied the claim. A few months later my starter went out and it got replaced no cost.

If you take off mods and before taking them to a shop that is fraud plain and simple, and it will affect everyone else in some way or another.

Isn't voiding the warrenty why we are all here? Or is that just me.
Anyway...any major mod will give the dealer a reason to say no. But it would be worth a shot.

I think the big part that most people dont realize is that the deal or underwriter needs to prove that the modification cause the problem. I have seen this on a few occasions that people get denied then go back and ask them to show proof that "x" mod caused "Y" problem. When they couldnt he asked to speak to a supervisor and very quickly the car was pushed into a bay and worked on.

Please tell me you didn't take the car in because you blew off the BOV hose.. I can understand if the pulley comes off but... c'mon.

You blew your recirc hose off and took it in for warranty WTF

I can understand (ab)using a warranty for things you don't feel like doing yourself, but come on now OMG

Wow i think we proved our point on taking your car into the shop for a disconnected hose. . . lets move on :toobad:
Now lets get back on track, when i bought my car the and i got my extended warranty, the dealer told me that, the way it works with adding aftermarket parts to your car, the DEALER has to install them, then it doens't void the warranty.

Now from the original question for that K&N air filter, as long as the dealer installed it from what i was told, NO it doesn't void your warranty. It MAY void the warranty on that "Specified" part but no the whole warranty on the car. Let me check and i'll get back when i find out. :)

Putting a K&N filter on your car won't cause it to blow up. If you have a problem and your worried about the warranty, just do what destruckeclipse said, and put the stock stuff back on before you take it in for service. A dealer might try and void your warranty for some piddly crap like that, which is "fraud, plain and simple". Athough if the warranty is through a company and not the dealer, they probably won't even care what you've done to the car, as long as it's not totally stupid.

If the k&n filter were to magically disintegrate, fly down your intake, bend up your valves, and dent your pistons, yes, that voids your warranty. If your stock air filter magically disintegrates....etc, that's warranty. If the aftermarket part directly causes the damage, it voids the warranty. The tech has to prove it is a direct cause. If they can't, call mitsu customer service or the closest dealer bigwig you can find. Example: at the Toyota dealership I work at a Toyota matrix came in overheating, and running like crap. The kid had done a whole bunch of worthless little mods to it (including a cheap header that cracked, giving it an ugly sounding exhaust leak). Our master tech had recently installed a turd, i mean trd supercharger on it. At some point after that, the kid put a little box in line with the MAF sensor. I assume it was some sort of resistor. The brand or product name had rubbed off it. The car was throwing MAF, and misfire codes. Our master tech removed the box, and it ran better. The kid brought daddy in to try and get work done under warranty. The kid claimed it couldn't make the car run bad, and couldn't void the warranty. My boss said, "So what does that box do?" The kid goes "It fools the computer into reading a different temperature and aircharge"(probably less intelligent sounding than that). My boss "So your telling me its lying to the computer and changing temperature and fuel variables, but thats not gonna make it run bad." ROFL Kid lowers head and shuts up at this point. :tease: Mind you this car already had the pre calibrated trd supercharger computer add on, and this kid had a friend install this little box that was supposed to make the engine run leaner (i assume) on a boosted application. Probably one of those $20 "stage II racing chip" things off of ebay. So thats the easy way to void your warranty.

Well it happened after school and i didnt bother poppin the hood because the dealers only like 2 blocks away and when i got there i was talking to my friend that works there, and he told me to bring it out back to the service department. When my dad got there he seen that the hose was off grabed a screw driver put the hose over it n clamped it back on. i could of done it myself but eh.... what can i do now...
