How many of you have alchohol inject dsm's?? can you guys argue that injecting methanol is better or more effective, however you guys would like to say it, than just 104-108 octane? I would just like to know how you guys like it, and what you find are the pros and cons to alchohol injection. I've read some basic things on alky inject. but on WRX's and GNX's, and have found different applications OF COURSE to have different results. May sounds newbie ish, sorry.

I don't currently have an alcohol injection system on my dsm, but it's definitely on the list of things to buy soon. The biggest advantage that injecting methanol and/or water is that it is MUCH cheaper than buying leaded race fuel. Also, you can control just how much methanol you want to inject via different nozzle sizes, so you can always inject more if you're wanting to up the boost even more

One more thing, injecting water with the methanol will help TONS with lowering the charge air temps and therefore combustion chamber temps to help control knock even more. There are so many advantages to water/alcohol injection that I'm honestly surprised it isn't more popular. :thumb:

i run water injection and its helpful, lower intake temps, cleaner valves/pistons, less knock, but i wouldnt say its like running 105 octane

I would. I run psi/AFR/timing on 91 w/ ethonal/H20 injection that I could only get away with on 100+ octane fuel. Takes a lot of tuning and different combinations but worth every penny.

To the original poster, this "I'm thinking of trying WI" stuff gets covered twice a week. There's TONS of information in these forums and all over the net.

I was comparing alcohol injection to running race gas, not water injection. Methanol actually does have octane raising properties. I mentioned the addition of some water with the methanol for the reasons you mentioned.

Theres an article in this months (august) issue of TURBO magazine about alcohol injection that was added to a EVO that helped it pump out 443whp. It was a Buschur racing kit.

The article kind of sucks because it doesn't really go into why A/I does what it does or what affects it has. Check out the the Buick GN sites and DSM water injection mailing list for more info.

I am a huge advocate of straight methanol injection. I have a few posts floating around here with some info in them. Theres also a huge wealth of info and data on the web, so I wont go into the details here. But quickly:

It has a huge cooling effect on the airstream. Some people report up to 40 percent drop in temp.
It has a fueling property, with an octane of around 110 to 120

Heres what I did with meth injection. Come to your own conclusion if its good :thumb:

14b @ 20-22 psi
stock injectors dialed back 10 to 13 percent
base timing @ 10-12 deg.
no knock
Warm day
ssmic

Yes, the car was a blast to drive! This was on a single, small jet, starting to come on around 2 psi. I have a fully progressive system on order, with much more headroom on the jet.

I too run straight Meth and am able to run 28psi on pump with 17* timing at wot. With a water alk mix I was able to run 23ish with 12*timing which pulled m full weight 2g to a 12.1@117 on pump gas and a huge bog after the 60 ft. So I think it goes without saying Meth is far more supperior.

where do you guys buy your methanol from?

Well with A/I, it can increase the knock threshold of 91-93 octane pump gas to the equivalent of 104-108 octane. It reduce actually 60-100 degrees of the EGT at WOT. Good kit, my friend has used on his TSi is from SMC enterprises. very cost effective, good way to reduce temp.

switched to straight alcohol tonight and OMG. I was able to bump my psi from 20psi to 23psi and take out -4% on my safc. All on a 60-1. After the pull i touched the throttle body and it was ice cold. now i know why the gm guys swear on alcohol

What were you running? Just straight water?

i had tried windshield washer fluid, and straight water. alcohol owned all

Welcome to the other side :D Are you running methonal, ethanol, ... ?
i just bought a bottle of rubbing alcohol to try. what should i use and where do i get it from? what do you run?

I've been running Ethanol (denatured alcohol from your paint supplier) but only because I didn't have a good source of methanol. The denatured is like $13 a gallon!! OMG But that was my only choice until now. I've got a local source for race grade methanol so I'm switching over, the stuffs only a few bucks a gallon and after diluting it with 25% distilled water it's the not only the cheapest but produces the best results. If you have any local shops that build race boats, that's the first place to check. They can probably sell you 5 gallon cans of the stuff for under $20.

what kind of pump/lines do you use? you arent worried about this stuff eating the rubber lines?

Will the windshiel washer resevoir be safe w/ methanol in there? Also does it have to be dilluted?

I've been using the WSW reservoir, Shurflow pump with viton seals, and nylon reinforced poly lines from OSH and haven't had any problems with leaks or corrosion/"eating away" and I've kept an eye on everything.

i will have to try just alcohol sometime. I am currently running 50/50 and it helped a lot. I am able to stay on my stock injectors and boost 18 psi with no problem. I also had to lean out my WOT by -15. So maybe with straight Alcohol I canget a few more psi with my stock injectors. :sneaky:

You think alc works well try Meth you will be taking about -10 more from your afc and running about 5 more pounds. And its 2.70 a gallon as opposed to the 10-13 for alch. I buy it by the drum if you lived here I would sell it to you buy the gallon. But you can just call some phone book or something.

Very Cool  I will have to so some looking around. I have found MEK readily available but that stuff is real nasty to everthing it comes in contact with.

How is the cooling of straight Methanol? Part of the reason I went with 50/50 is because I still run of a stock SMIC.

Just did some more reading on Methanol and had some questions for the guys running straight 100% methanol through there systems. From what I read 100% Methanol is very corrosive to aluminum and anything else that is not stainless steel. Also that it has a high water absorption rate if left exposed to the atmosphere. It will also gel if left sitting for a couple of days. But it has a RON rating of 105-115 and can lower intake air temps by 100 degrees. So you can understand why.

Anyone having problems like this? Want to switch over to 100% methanol and just don't want to destroy what I have.

I have not had any of those issues you mentioned. I got my car to the track after the switch and went from a 12.1@117 to a [email protected] with a 1.9 60 ft and trapped 122 later in the night all on a 50 trim. The car just runs better with Meth overall and i still get 2-7-29mpg and can pull those times any time i want.

not sure what the chemical is called but its an additive to add to the 100% methanol so that its not corrosive to your fuel lines
