Resolved Al Blaha MAF

A 1G MAS that has been "hacked" (or opened up to flow more air) by Mr. Al Blaha himself. The problem with really hacking 1G meters is at idle, so much air bypasses the "counting" section of the MAS that the car runs poorly. I believe Mr. Blaha installs a little door connected to a spring that at low-flow conditions (i.e. idle) makes most of the air go through the metered portion of the MAS. At higher flow rates, it moves out of the way and allows more unmetered air through the MAS. Honestly, I can't remember if Al used to do this himself or if others suggested it as an driveability "improvement" for hacked 1G MAS's.

The main goal is to get more air into the engine before hitting fuel cut on the 1G MAS. My personal opinion is to just get a 2G MAS and compensate with a fuel controller. They easily have 2-3X the flow area of a 1G MAS and won't get you into problems (MAS overrun) until you are making crazy power.

all i did was remove the silencer and the bottom screen.
oh also moved the screw down a couple turns and can run 16 psi without fuel cut

the blaha mods are simple, you can do it yourself

A fully gutted MAS is more than simply removing the silencer and unscrewing the screw. I used to get fuel cut despite those changes whenever the temperature got colder.

The modded/gutted MAS looks like this:

It is true that idle will be poor so people have used the spring type trap door or weighted trap door to lessen the air coming through at idle. You can remove the door once you get an AFC and can adjust the fuel at lower rpms.

This is a touchy mod and I would not recommend it. Instead, like Matt said, many 1G guys just swap in a 2G MAS.
