air fuel gauge install [Merged 10-8] A/F AF ratio worthless blinky

A WB O2 sensor at the location of the stock sensor (front, anyway) is not recommended.

im lookin for a 60mm air/fuel ratio gauge. Im not having too much luck finding one in the $40-$60 range. if anyone knows where i can find one, please give me a link or a way to find it.

Yeah, pity they don't color-change like the advertisement next to them does, I guess.

You could get some tinted plastic and put it over the lens, though.

A narrowband gauge is more impressive as a lightshow for your passenger. Save yourself the need to buy twice, and pick up one of these right off the bat:

It's like cheating.

A cheap a/f gauge (narrowband) is worthless and a waste of money. Either save up and buy a wideband (about $200) or spend your money on something else.

i have this autometer air fuel ratio gauge. i installed it to the o2 wire but it is not reading corectly. i connected it to the white wire. thats what my brothers friend told me. is there a short way to put the wire under the dash board? what color wire do i connect it to.

i thought it was the blue wire.

yeah they only work at WOT
LOL i'm running a glowshift electronic needle type a/f gauge hooked up to my wideband 02 sensor and its reads just like a wideband digital readout would, except no numbers, idk why it works but it does...

i thought it was the blue wire.
no its the black/white wire, pin 86 i believe?

is this for your 95 tsi or your 1g?

I know these are nearly useless, but I got this and an autometer boost gauge for free. I went off of a few diagrams and am sure it's installed right.

1: The led stays at full lean until the car is moving and past 1500 rpm. Revving in neutral doesn't change it.

2: When I'm not giving it any gas and it's full lean, the gauge starts to dim and occasionally goes out completely until I give it gas.

Is this normal operation for these or could there be a o2 sensor / alternator charging issue?

Thanks!

*Just read here: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...61136-autometer-air-fuel-gauge-how-works.html

During hard deceleration the PCM will command an extremely lean
mixture for lowest exhaust emissions. This may cause the signal to go outside the range that the meter will indicate. When this happens, there will be no LED's lit on the A/F meter.

Would this explain the dimming and gauge going out?

Well other than just telling him to get a wideband, why dont you try and help him? Neways check your connections, and check the voltage. Are you sure you hooked it up to the correct wires? I would say just double check, and honestly double check...look at not one but 2 or 3 different wiring instructions on here and make sure they are all the same. I hope it helps...

Exact same thing happened to me with my Auto Meter narrow band. I had it connected to the wrong wire. I changed wires and it worked good after that. I can't remember which wire I connected it to in the end but if you don't have any answers by tomorrow I'll try to find out.

I followed the road race install guide, and did some searching here and found a thread that showed a detailed guide on how to look at the ecu plugs when doing wiring. I also searched and found a list of each ecu wires' color and use. I'm pretty sure it's hooked up right. It works while cruising and WOT, just doesn't seem to work well at low throttle and rpm. I will double check the connections though.

I don't have the extra funds for a wideband right now. Maintenance and a few of the stage 1 upgrade mods are first on the list. I wouldn't even have bothered with this a/f gauge if it weren't free :)

Thanks for the responses :)

* and I hooked up the ground of the gauge to the green/black wire at the last wire on the bottom row on the largest plug, the o2 signal to a white wire at the 4th wire on the top row of the same plug (4th wire from the left, looking at the back of the plug, wires coming out at me), and the power wire to a red, thicker wire on the smallest plug, bottom row, 2nd wire over.

i have bought 2 autometer gauges narrow band,:notgood: and i hook them up stright to the o2 senor and it just stays at rich, i started with the ecu wire tap and it still said rich?? i have tryed 2 gauges and all i get is rich off the ecu and o2 sensor.. i have no CELs either im thinking DEAD o2 senor??? please help thanks the cars a 91 TSI AWD

That's what you get for buying a narrowband. They are not accurate at all. Unplug the o2 sensor when the car is running. If the operation of the engine changes, the 02 sensor is working(give it a minute to see though).

Are you running rich?
Your 02 sensor COULD be messed up, but your problem is more than likely the fact that you have a narrowband as opposed to a wideband which will give you an actual reading.
