What are your goals? There are several high power DSMs on this site that get away fine without a standalone. For most of us I think something like the GM MAFT/SAFC combo would work well ( and maybe the www.dsmchips.com also ). You will definitely have more control with the EMS, but at street levels of power I don't know how beneficial it would be. For a 1G I would go with the dsmchips.com and the S-AFCII ( and a GM MAF to get rid of the factory restrictive unit ). For us 2G guys we need some sort of standalone to monitor knock ( or a DSMlink ), but the 1G guys have the ability to monitor it with a simple and cheap datalogger. Sorry I don't have any info on the EMS. Good luck!

i have goals of hopefully 10 second times. not saying i will be running it right away but hopefully i will be in the mid to low 11's when it is running again. i will be happy with high 11's though. e-mail me if you want details to the motor. im running the gt12 dual bb turbo, sbr fmic, 650cc injectors hopefully being upgraded soon, 255 fuel pump, act 2600 clutch, act light weight flywheel, then i will have the motor and aem. i will have stock maf till i can afford the upgrade to something better. the aem i mostly want because of the problems i have had in the past with safc's. i guess a lot of that is because the ones i had were all used but i figure why take another chance. i want to be able to see what the car is doing and tune it as good as possible. i am going to have to take care of this motor because it is going to be my baby and i wont be able to afford to blow it. i am not going to be driving the car daily but it will be registered and street driven part of the time. thanks for the info. any more will help.

Be prepared to buy a W/B O2 kit, an AEM MAP sensor, a 2g knock sensor, and a GM Air Intake Temp sensor. Other than those things, you should be set. EMS is NOT plug & play.

EMS $1300 Local AEM Dealer
GM IAT sensor $25 Road Race
2g Knock Sensor $67 locally. I'd call Conicelli first.
AEM 3bar MAP $127 Road Race
AEM UEGO $346 Road Race

Total including EMS
$1865

Total add-ons
$565 + shipping

If you can't afford to blow your engine and have it replaced when you get an ems then it isn't for you. You'll need to pay for the tuning (with the questions you asked you and I know you wont be able to do it yourself). To be completely honest your not ready for a standalone unless you have gobs of cash to throw at it. Imagine problems with safc's before because it will be much much worse.

I dont want to put you down but I was in your place too before and I had to learn this the hard and expensive way.

ok with me and the help of my friends and the dyno i think i will be good at tunning my car. i dont have the money to blow a 5000 dollar engine is what i am saying. i mean are you saying the aem is going to blow my engine? if thats the case why the hell is anyone using it. dont come calling me a dumbass because that is basically what you just did. the problems i had with the safc's was because they were ####ed up. they were used afc's and didnt work. i had 2 like that. one worked fine for a little while then broke, the other didnt work right from the time i hooked it up. i can pay for tunning and i can pay for the parts. all im saying is that i cant afford for a broke ass part to cost me 5k more. i was asking for advantages and disadvantages not whether you think i can afford it or if you think i should be using it.

I'm lost
but , Imo if you have/spent $5k on a motor it doesnt mean you need a
$2k tunning device to get the power out. You can spend $1k on the average goodies and some dyno time , then I'm sure you can find a place for the grand left over. Unless your car is gonna be at thde track every weekend aem is probably not worth the $$$ wether you got it or not. Just my opinions.

i do have the gt12 dual ball bearing. 56 trim.

as far as needing the aem the car will be at the track almost every weekend probably and i know i didnt have to have it i wanted it because i have seen what others have done with it. i know that it works wether its hard to use or not.
