Someone gave me some adjustable cam gears for pretty much free, and I was wondering if they make the idle sound different.(as in the loping sound that aftermarket camshafts have). Also, I don't plan on tuning the A/F so what would be the best degree adjustment on a turbo 420a?
 
you have to pop the valve cover off and use a dial indicater on the valves and take a precise measurement of when valves are opening in relation to TDC. this process is called "degree the engine"
if you have factory cams they will not need to be degreed as the factory cams will almost always work best at "zero". the adustable sprokets you got look nice and will come in handy someday when you actually do get cams. they're still worth installing, but i wouldnt mess with degree changes if you have factory stock cam shafts.
 
correct. if your gonna stay NA or even if your gonna go turbo, a nice pair of cams will do wonders when there properly dialed in. as far as stock cam gears with adjustable sprokets goes, there will not need to be any degree adjustments.

and if your lookin for the lopy, v8, rough kinda idel muscle car type of idel then your gonna have to purchase the high lift cams cause stockers will never do that.
 
If the head or block has been decked then the adjustability will come in handy. Setting the cams at 0 will no longer be correct. You need a dyno to decide whether or not making adjustments will benefit or not. Another thing, cam gears only move your power band. Even dyno tuning you will gain power either up top, down low, or midrange. But that power doesnt come free, if you gain top end power you will lose low end and vise versa.
 
You can also change the spool up charicteristics with the exhaust cam. It is still a comprimisie, but you can tune the cams so the engine runs in a way that you like best.
