ac compressor bracket removal ?

hey guys, i removed my ac a while back but i left the ac compressor bracket on the block because i was told that of the 2 bolts that held it to the block, one of them uses the compressor bracket as a spacer for a axle. once i found this out i went ahead and went to mitsubishi to order a spacer that they made for the models that did not come with ac. i have the spacer now, but i am not sure which on of the 2 bolts it goes behind. i was hoping one of you had done this and could tell me or if there is any way i can find out for myself. it is worth the weight reduction sense i have the spacer and all, but it is not worth taking off if i am going to screw up my axles.

ok, theres this huge heavy bracket which holds the ac compressor to the block. One of the four bolts that holds that bracket to the block also goes through the half shaft thingy... and works as a spacer. If you replace that bolt without the bracket or a spacer, the axle will probably break. I just hacksawed off the little part needed to keep the space between the two and used that.

If you are sitting in the driver seat, the bolt that uses the spacer would be the one on the left side. When you get under the car and start unbolting the axle, you can see how thw bracket is sandwiched between the driver side bolt hole and the block.

Here, you can see the bolt on the left which is circled. That is the bolt the spacer goes behind.

You could buy the correct spacer from mitsubishi MB297732, or you could use a stack of washers that come out to 8mm thick.

He already purchased the spacer from mitsubishi. He just needed to know which bolt hole on the carrier bearing to use the spacer on.
 
I missed that part... I guess if you put the bracket up there and you see the big gap between the block and the intermediate shaft, you know where it goes.
 
once you remove the 4 long bolts that held the ac compressor to the block, there are still 2 bolts left holding up the bracket. those are the only 2 bolts that i left on. so you guys are saying that i should take the bracket off and put the spacer behind the one on the left? thanks for the help, this thread should be of use to lots of us.
 
When I removed my A/C I chopped the bracket so only the spacer remained. Later I had the tranny rebuilt at a shop. I assumed all was good when driving home and then, THWACK, THWACK, THWACK! Pulled over and found that the bolt that holds the axle carrier bearing to the block (with the A/C spacer) had snapped! The other bolt was completely gone! I came to the conclusion that they didnt reinstall the spacer and the second bolt backed itself out. The shop wouldnt accept responsibility so I vowed to tell my friends never to go there.

Anyway, I came across another intact A/C bracket and chopped it so 1 bolt holds it onto the block and the second bolt holds the axle in place. So if the axle is removed, the spacer stays in place unless the 2nd bolt is removed.

Maybe something to keep in mind...

I actually bolted up the axle with the spacer installed and then tack welded the spacer to the carrier bearing bracket. No parts of the ac braket remain and there is no chance of loosing or forgetting the spacer.

Brillant! :thumb: I'm walking into the garage right now and rechopping the bracket and welding it to the block. Thanx 92awddssm~:thumb:
