simple question, Per the DSM manuals it states that you have to remove the engine to extract and replace the AC compressor...is this true?

I am about to drop my rebuild in (1st timer here) and I noticed the starter and AC compressor are shot. Got replacements on the way, but i was wondering if I should wait till they get here to drop the motor with the new parts attached...or just drop the motor and start putting it all back together and then be able to install the new starter and compressor when they arrive.
'
it doesn't seem logical to design a engine that has to be pulled in order to change out any part...let alone a ac compressor.

any advice?

From what i have read the AC comp is a B***h to install or remove with the motor in the car, BUT, it can be done.

I'f you've got the motor out anyway, i'd just wait till the new gets in and put it on the motor before you drop it in.

OR. . . why not remove the AC and free up a little hp?

I had my A/C clutch sieze up (1990 GSX) on me and ended up buying a compressor to replace the whole unit with. I have been waiting till I do the headgasket to do it, I just assumed it would be cake with the head off of the car. Is it going to be easier or will it still be a pain? Also are there any o-rings that need to be replaced or is it as simple as removing the old compressor and installing a new one? I know the other steps involved such as evacuating the system and the what not.

The 2g one would be pretty easy with no intake manifold in the way but can't see why the engine would have to come out on a 2g .Maybe on a 1g haven't looked that close at the compressor on my 1g.

Man, obviously you've never lived this far south!!! Your correct, it would be nice to be able to free up some hp. But when its 115-119 degree's in the summer, you'll be saying screw the horsepower. My a/c is out right now, but luckily I drive my truck most of the time as a daily driver. Not having a/c in Texas or even here in Arkansas is just not an option. Here in Arkansas, sometimes in the summer the humidity gets in the 80 percentile as well as being over 100 degree's. it really really sucks azz...

AC is also personal preferance. I only suggested it as an option, not as a set in stone thing to do.

Yes i know how hot it gets, my family has a timeshare in alabama that we go to in summer. So don't tell me i don't know.

Not trying to start an argument, I hate it when people do that on this site, just saying that its not much of an option down here unless you drive solely at night and park it in the summer. Not trying to tell you what you know, sorry if it seemed that way. Although, if the weather keeps changing the way it has lately with this "globle warming" thing, we may all be putting AC back on (j/k)

To you though, it's not an option. But like i said, i know a lot of people who could give 2 shits about AC.

My friends brother works in mississippi, and has a ws6 no air, and a big stupid loud truck with no ac. And it doesn't bother him.

Like i said before, FOR YOU it may not be an option, but for other people is all preferance. I'm not trying to argue either, but i think you need to think outside the box and realize that not everyone needs the same things based soley on geographical location.

I have removed the AC system on both 2 90's and 3 2G's. It can be done with the engine in but it takes some real finese. More so putting it in since the bolts attach the compressor to the bracket at the pump are so long that they barely have room to fit and may take inserting them in the right order. see my post here for removal and reverse:

I am not sure if the orings in the hose assys will have to be replaced since I have never installed, just removed the system.

Yeah, I'll agree to disagree with you on that point.:D Your correct, for me I need A/C, with my job I just can't drive an hour in 100 plus degree heat and get to work all sweaty and all. But I understand what your saying. And I think I speak for both myself and staticbrainwash, we didn't mean to get off subject. The compressor probably would be best done with the engine removed. I personally am a lazy bastard, and will have the dealership do it for me.:p

Dealer can kiss my ass for that money, i'll just wait till i rebuild my motor to pull the AC. It hasn't worked in 2 years, and i don't feel like paying to get it changed over or recharged.

So yeah, i'd just do it with it out of the car.

Does anyone know what belt you will need to retain the rest of the acessories? I read something a long time ago about needing a toyota belt or something.
