That's messed up that they trashed everything like that but HELLO, he was carrying a hand gun illegally! Maryland is as bad as California, that's the last state I'd enter without using brain function. There's two different stories in this thread:

My buddy got caught carrying a hand gun illegally and got his dumb ass thrown in jail.

Everyone laughs.

Asshole cops thrashed my buddy's property and it's lawyer callin' time.

Everyone crys.

They thought you were transporting drugs. When the dogs didn’t find anything thing they tore apart your car and had the dog jump on your hood and scratch it just to discourage you form running drugs incase you already dropped them off or whatever. If you’re suspected of dealing drugs around here and they search your house they tear apart everything. They bust holes in your walls, cut open your couches and mattresses and other things that are not necessary just to discourage you from dealing drugs. That’s the kind of shit that goes on around here.

And if they find nothing, they pay to fix EVERYTHING to show the COPS NOT TO DO SOMETHING that will produce nothing.

I'm pretty sure that ppls who were in the car could sue the maryland cops for their action. Like in NJ if the cop car hits you or something to do a damage to any property and that person decide to sue them they will pay them without even going to the court since it is their fault. First I believe your friend has a good case since he does have a witness that he did told the cop that he is from taxas and he has license and gun, also he did ask the cop to get the gun [that was very smart move]. since the cop didnt find anything on his car he shouldnt be going to the jail.. make sure he counter sue them for harrasing them and waisting his time. I'm sure he could get alot of money off this...

WOW, i just got pulled over today for for going 32 in a 30 and for stoping 6inches past the white line, do cops everywhere in the us have nothing to do, i mean i get followed to work every day by a cop, i doent even have a gs-t WTF? so the cop tells me that he is going to let me off with a warning becasue i dont have any other tickets. cops just piss me off period.

Cops are scared of one thing, and one thing only. (NO. Not the closing down of a donut shop). Lawyers. Powerful, successful, ruthless lawyers, who can toast their butts to hell, and get the entire PD in a PR rut. Obviously, they take their chances when they see that 95% of the people they encounter (a) can't afford an excellent attorney and (b), don't have the time to go through the hassle of legal proceedings, so they say, screw it, we'll play with em. From time to time, they run into some guy with a video camera, or a rich spoilt brat who owns an island, and that reminds them that they are not above the law. Your experience is not unique; it happens all over the country ever day. There are a few very good professional cops, and lots of bad donuts too. Stay safe and don't give em reason to mess with your head.

Having a Texas CCW permit and having a handgun in Maryland is illegal, it is considered a misdemenor, your buddy was breaking the law. Is a misdemenor worth 30 days jail time, I can't say. Do I agree with the law, no. I feel if a national set of rules and regulations should be set, and one meeting the requirements should be granted a CCW permit that is honored across the country.

Plenty of info on CCW permit laws for all states can be found here:

Part of the responsibility of having a CCW permit and carrying a handgun is knowing the laws, what states are ok, and what states are not. I carry in Pennsylvania, and I know better than to cross into any of the neighboring states, none of them honor reciprocity with Pa.

The police were way out of line in their drug search. They should compensate your friends for everything damaged. Since your friend had the handgun, I doubt the judge will see things that way.

Yeah... I don't know about anywhere else, but in Oklahoma, state troopers are all honest, and they have better things to do than to pull you over because of what you drive, or w/e... i would trust them with anything... however city and county cops around here will pull you over for going 2 over and all that crap... i've been pulled over for having a 'suped up car' before, and I was driving my stock GS at the time... imo, state troopers = very good professional cops, and city and county = the opposite... just my thoughts...

sucks about the car though.. good luck

that my friend is why you dont tell the cops you have a concealed weapon permit and a concealed weapon, he wasnt being searched until after he told them that...the cops would have NO reason to search before that and legally could not do it, so maybe he shoulda just not said anything?

Um, you're legally obligated to tell them if you have a CCW.

That's just stupid not to and a good way to get someone accidently shot.

Alright, I'll try to address everyone's questions/comments thus far.

He got arrested for carrying a weapon. Crossing the double white lines was just an excuse to pull him over.
Erm... the story's changing. Your first telling was, "Just an hour and a half later, in Maryland, they get pulled over for "crossing a solid white line" with the trailer while making a turn."
His lawyer here in Texas says that up there, if they see Texas plates, they will do whatever they can to cause trouble. He said the reason they searched so hard for drugs was because he was from Texas, and lots of drugs come in through Texas from Mexico.
I don't doubt the truth in that.
Scott said that the cop was also suspicious because Scott's gun was "so big". It was a .45. The cop was like, "why do you need such a big gun, huh?" Turns out I'm sure he was jealous because his was smaller.
I'm sure that was it. After all, the 12-gauge in the rack and the rifled slugs don't even count. And, for dinky-dickedness, cops are second only to Corvette owners. Everyone knows that.
Give me a break. So, if I say I suspect you have drugs because you're black, that's prejudice. But if I suspect you have drugs because you're from Texas, that's fine.
Unfortunately, few law enforcement prejudices come out of thin air. Most are based on real-world experiences.
Defiant - I'm not stretching the truth, leaving anything out, etc. These are the facts, for real. As I said at the beginning, it's absolutely insane, unbelievable.
I'm sure they're the facts as you've heard them. But you weren't there. You have little more idea of what the facts are than any of the rest of us reading this. All you have is the story as your friend tells it. It's nothing against you, nor your friend. It's just the way history works.
And yes, we do hope your friend gets fair treatment.

NOT true. That's state to state and in a lot of states, you do NOT have to tell law enforcement if you are packing legally. In fact, I can't remember a single state that requires you too and I'm a hardcore CCW guy. And of course I didn't bother to look up Maryland before posting this... damn it.

Shit, if I had CCW, you bet your ass I'd be carrying a .45
Yeah but the .45 doens't have the stopping power of my 44mag super redhawk.... on that note I don't carry a 11.5 inch gun around in my car either.

Your buddy should have known if his CWP was valid in the state he was traveling through. When you take the course they give you a list in BOLD as to which states honor the permit.

When you are driving and an officer tails you it is more than likely they will find something to stop you for within a mile of driving wether it be something as simple as touching the white line as your driving or stopping past the the line at an intersection. If you pass that line you can get a ticket for running a red light. The situation could have been handled differently by both parties.

The smart thing to do in the event that you get pulled over is to notify the officer that you have a CWP and hand it to him as you are handing him your license and registration. Everytime an officer pulls someone over they never know what kind of stop it is going to be.

Defiant, for once i am going to agree with you on you comments.

I have the same gun and I would never carry that thing LOL. I carry a little 9mm compact with +p Golden Sabers and that's plenty.

OK guys, here's the update:

Scott knows the district attorney here in Texas (he is building her house in fact). She called Maryland to discuss the matter and to show a good character witness. After Maryland "re-examined the details of the case", they decided to drop the charges. So Scott is out $500 plus about $175 for additional paperwork. No word yet on if he will be getting his gun back. When all the smoke clears, Scott will be preparing a nice letter, I'm sure along with damage estimates, for the fine folks in Maryland.

And Defiant, no, my story was not changing. I know I physically wasn't there, and I don't know what kind of friends you have, but Scott doesn't just make crap up. I also tend to believe the reports also, just in case I would have any doubt in something the best man in my wedding told me.

Hell, we could simply dismiss every thread anyone writes on this forum for fear that it was written by some 7 year old girl with good computer skills and lots of free time pretending to be a 25 year old male DSM owner.

Thanks for all the support and comments guys. I'm sure most of you are glad to see it ended up working out OK.

I have no respect for the police because I look at them the way they look at me. The cop has to earn my respect.

I'm sorry but that has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You have no respect for cops, because they have no respect for you. You say the cop has to earn your respect first before you will respect them. If I came across you, cop or not, I would care less about earning your respect if you already had a chip on your shoulder. The way I see it why not be the bigger man and show him the respect he has earned as a cop, which I'm sure the cop will then show you just as much respect. It's a two way street. People just having a shitty attitude at a cop for no reason. I have been on both sides of this story. I have been pulled over many times, and have never had a problem. Being prior military I have worked for military cops and seen the pure disrespect for a no reason. You break the law, as simple as that law may be, you pay for it. Great thing about someone being disrespectful to a military cop...you just slap the cuffs on them. No other reason needed than their disrespect.

Now, I do believe that the cops may have gone over board according to the original posters comments. But, again there are three sides to each story.

WELCOME TO MARYLAND.

That's all I can say. Trust me, cops aren't too reasonable around here.

That really sucks for your friend though, but I guess they were just doing their jobs. :notgood:
