Absolute noob question, but really need help here =(

Hi, my name is Zack and I'm realtivly new to the dsm world, I know absolutely nothing about Turbos/supers other than the scientific anatomy behind their purpose concering voumetic capacities etc, And since I've been driving(only 3 years XD) Ive always been a mopar user (first car being a Dodge Challenger) My challenger was wrecked in a terrible accident ( BOO!) and I've been researching and researching and I've fallen in love with DSM! I'm looking to purchase a 1999 Eclipse GS-T(only because they get better mpg ) and from my understaning they come with a 4G63 engine, which is turbocharged?
My whole purpose for this thread comes from my core confusion and question

I want a car (eclipse GS-T) That is both FAST and good on the mpg, I work around 10 miles from my house everyday, I go to the gym often(2miles) and I go to college(1mile) and I visit my friend each weekend who lives about 25miles away
I would appreciate beyond belief if you can help me set up a list of parts/additions for my GS-T to make it both faster and IF possible better MPG, if not I'll take Faster but with a very very small hit to my mpg, and also I'd like to see if theres any possible way to make the mpg better than it is stock, I'm buying an 1999 Eclipse GS-T STOCK for whatever it may cost me(I belive the range or 3-5k?) and from there I want to work, I'm looking to smacking kids around on the street when they try to be cocky in their lame ass Vtec Hondas( I can talk shit because my first car the Challenger dropped around 400HP just weighed heavy as a freaking elephant, hence why Dodge isn't my choice anymore) and ontop of owning the streets I'd like it to be "gas-friendly" as much as possible.. I'm not looking for a post saying GO FAST!! or that bullshit, I'm not looking to drag race , I'd drop a 16gTurbo in with other parts only if I can manage a good mpg with that(which I doubt)

best advice i have is when you want to get good mpg keep your foot out of it... otherwise simple and respectable bolt ons will work great... good intake, downpipe, exhaust, and front mount/ piping... depending on how far you want to go with it a tuning system like dsmlink and having someone very knowledgeable about tuning the cars will net the best mpg in my opinion

Okay thanks alot! I was thinking on keeping the motor stock(for now, 210HP is still better than most cars on the road) and Putting in a new intake,piping for now and avoiding tampering with it for now.

YEAH just keep foot off the floor and you get good gas milage ha and thats funny you say you wanna keep good gas AND race it. kinda dont go hand in hand ha seems like you will be wasting gas if always racing on the streets. but hey. i can do it. hondas are easy to beat. even with a N/T haha so good luck and have fun with the turbo. wish i had one

one of the guys cars we work on has a 2g spyder and got over 40mpg on the way to the shootout this past summer and he has built engine, big turbo, and bolt ons... tuning was definately helpful

The funny thing is, I went with turbo only because it reminded me of my charger(RIP) and wasn't TOO insanely expensive.. I mainly just want something quick thats not going to cost me $100 a week in gas, I don't mind 20mpg or 19 range, but I see some people pulling 14-16.. Thats insane =O I live along Route 9 in New York and I use it daily to get where I can, I can coast on I84 at 55-65 even 70 w-o traffic but on rt 9 it jumps from 40-45-55 and so forth.. But all the jackass kids from the local highschool have their little Humming bird sounding Hondas with just a modded exhaust try and race you, My challenger used to SMOKE them I'd let them get like two car lengths ahead before shifting up.. This time around I want to try DSM for the fact they're light weight and have awesome acceleration for their size/weight when turboed

As for now after getting some good bolt on parts to help everything run smooth, I'll save for a dsmlink and extra $$$ to get someone to help me set everything up, and I'm going to be a ricer and drop the suspension.. just saying..

especially with a gst you should have no problem getting over 20... awds have more trouble with fuel mileage because of more drivetrain loss and shorter gearing... not only that but again most fuel mileage issues are caused by poor or lack of tuning

Perfect! I mean eventually, I'll go 16g and 26psi ONCE I get a better job and get out of college(I'm only 18 working 28-30 hours a week at $9 and hour =( ) I just want some above average power to keep me entertained til then

Sorry typo, My first car was an Intrepid R/T then I was sold an 08 challenger from my uncle who's fiance's father owns a Dealer ship for 28,000 I paid 10000 that I saved, my grandpa spotted me 10,000 and I sold the Intrepid for around 5750.

And it's not entirely wrecked, It's got serious body damage, a guy hit me going around 65-70 as I was stopped and since Dodges frames are unibody, you hit one spot the whole side will tilt =/ Insurance is fighting out the details currently, I need a new right passanger door, right quarter panel frames ruined, axel more than likely is shot too

But seeing that damage repair cost on bodies is way too high now adays, I clearly can't fix all of that in one shot and sell it or use the car, I want to have this GS-T as a daily driver that I can still use like I want in the mean time while I ATTEMPT to make my Dodge useable, I can't even sell the car as is with the body damage..

Well, my thoughts are that DSMs aren't always the most reliable vehicles. Not because of the vehicles themselves, but because ppl don't care for them properly. The 4G63 is an amazing motor and has an fantastic record for reliability and performance, if things are done right.
They have tight tolerances and really can't be jerry-rigged together. A lot of them have been horrifically abused, passed hands multiple times, and are now in desperate need of some TLC.

With that said, be very picky and cautious when you start looking at cars. If you're not and just buy the shiniest one you see, you're more than likely going to fall into a money pit just keeping it going.

If you find one that you are uncertain about, take pictures and ask the folks on this site. We'll be happy to steer you in the right direction.
These cars are great and even in stock form, many can easily still hold their own against more modern rides.

And there's nothing wrong with Hondas. Making fun of them makes you look childish. Make fun of their drivers, they're the ones you have a problem with.

As he pointed out I typoed and said a Charger(WISH I had a 2011 charger, I love them still) But they're just heavy clunkers with jacked up HP, really not much more then that unless you're dropping an insane amount on a camaro,GTO or Cobra =/

As of now, til I decide what to do with my wreck(the parts are still good) I'm going with a one tone black GS-T with a 4g63 =) we shall see, if I can get everything built properly under the hood and tuned I'll eventually get some serious power going on it(from what I heard once you try any kind of turbocharge you get addicted and end up going 16g)

I paid 4500 for my 95 eagle talon tsi awd wioth 73,000 miles, with slight mods such as intake BOV and exahaust. Well i work about the same as you and my car is my baby. Yes i agree with Kreez that these cars are not very realiable eventhough the 4g63 motors are amazing! This car is my daily driver and ive been without for as long as 3 months My advice foer you is to go for it! My car is now running around 350hp with the mods you can see on my profile. I work and any money i make goes into my car. You will get hooked on these cars and want to do more and more, and i can tell you right now eventually after you start with simple mods the whole gas mileage thing will slowly be out of your head. Im still learning so much from this website about these cars, and im lucky to have a great dsm mechanic within 10 mins of my house. Make sure you look hard and long for the right dsm because you can buy ones that have a great amount of problems without knowing it. Good luck on your search and GO DSM!!!
