ABS good or bad

I think it really depends on what kind of help you want stopping your car. It will keep you from skidding in a straight line. It pumps the brake pedal if you slam on it. It has saved my butt a couple times from simple accidents on ice, but I don't like ABS. In my dads Camry, I think its a bit too aggresive and scared me a few time because it pumps back up so much. If the car already has it, I think you should just leave it. If it stopped working then it gets expensive to replace and fix it. It's really up to you if you want to keep it, thought remember its for safety otherwise they wouldn't make it a safety option for cars.

the abs system on the 1g's (at least 1ga & gvr4) is horrible, 2g's have a much better (and useable) system. ABS helps keep the car from being upset, and the best thing it does is keep you from sliding when your newbishness mashes the brakes in a corner. (not you in particular, but people do it all the time).

my 1g has no abs from the factory, and my galant definitely stops better with it disabled.

For compitent drivers, IMO, ABS isn't all that necessary. I honestly prefer to control braking myself. In some vehicles it'll do a better job of pumping the brakes, but in some situations I've found it better to keep the brakes depressed and let snow buildup do the stopping (in situations where there is snow over top of the ice for example).

The guy I bought my car from ordered it without ABS, he totaled his last car because of ABS. I personally do not like ABS, but I dont drive my car in rain or snow. On dry pavement, she stops on a dime. If the car is daily driven, in areas with bad weather or lots of rain, by the average driver, I would recommend ABS.

To the tune of about $1300 for the ABS module itself. Mine's been out for over 2 years. I don't really miss it all that much, and wouldn't mind just taking it out and saving 5lbs of weight and making a little more space in the car.

I will agree. For me at 40+ years old I grew up without ABS. I am used to controlling the brakes myself and one of the worst accidents I was at fault the car I was driving had ABS. Instinct took over and I was trying to stop like I would if I had a non-ABS setup. If I would have just stood on the brakes it probably would have stopped in time, but the slight "pumping" I did on the ABS setup totally defeated the purpose.

If you grew up with it and instinctivly stood on them, they work great in most situations.

Some cars do work better than others, but I personally do not like ABS.

Now maybe on a high end car (Ferrari, 700 series BMW, Porche), but I do not really have to worry about finding out any time soon.

In both of my DSMs (1G and 2G), the ABS system failed. So from now on, I will either buy my cars w/o it, or disable it.
