A/T Fluid preference and level check method?

i just rebuilt my 96tsi& needhelp w/tranny fluid. i have had 5 different resources tell me five different ways to check the level. also what type should i use? any help would b awesome

by the way its an auto

the *ONLY* way it should be checked is on a level surface, in Neutral, with the e-brake on, with the car running.
I use good ol' Diamond ATF, can't go wrong.
