well the outer CV boot went out on my front passenger axle and I'm looking to fix the problem. I'm planning on either 1)getting a whole new axle ($70) or 2) getting a repair kit ($20) and I don't know which one to do. If I was to get the whole axle I'd take the car to a shop to put it on, but I'm thinking if I just repair the CV boot myself I could save some money and learn somehting. So here are my questions:

1)approx. how much would an average shop charge to put a new axle on?

2)what else do I need with the CV boot repair kit in order to get in installed (grease, etc.?)

3)if i was to just repair the boot could I do it with a jack stand holding up the front wheel and not have to take the whole axle off?

4)does anyone have the link off of VFAQ that shows how to repair a CV boot? I searched but couldn't find it :(

Thanks for the help in advance guys

Why would you say you will have a shop put the axle in, but you would do the boots yourselft. Either way, the axle has to come out(unless you want to make it hard to take the cv joint apart.

What I did with my driver's axle, since I couldn't get it out... removed the axle from the wheel bearing, cut the old boot off, carefully pounded the joint off with a soft hammer. Then I removed all the ball bearings and cleaned the old grease out. reinstalled bearings and packed the new grease in joint, replaced locking clip. Then put boot on axle and carefully pounded joint back on. then using the special tool for the boot clamps, clamped boot down.

boot kits normally come w/ everything needed, just ask if you are unsure.

when my cv joints went i just got 2 new axles. replacing the axle is really easy. in my vo tech shop i rebuilt a few cv joints for customers cars and it is a royal pain in the a$$. if i were you id just get some new axles. and by the way, where did you get the price of $70 for an axle? mine were like $120 each with the axles upfront when you bought the new ones as a core charge.

yeah I'm leaning towards a nex axle, I have a few friends that could probably help me out with the install.

oh and the only site I can think of right now that sells them for $70 is thepartsbin.com but I know there were a few others that I found online for the same price.
