Ok, I've searched and searched and searched and can't get a straight answer. My daughter has a 98 Spyder GS 2.4 that lost the timing belt and the motor. I've been trying to find a new motor and can't seem to find one anywhere.
Does anybody have any options for me?
It's her first car and I really don't want to spend a ton of money on it since it already has a salvage title.
I've heard that a 98 Galant motor will work and that it won't work and they do look a little different.
What's a dad supposed to do?
Thanks for any help anybody can provide.

Are you able to work on it yourself? If you can't find an engine local you can just buy a stock rebuilt head and oem timing component kit and change it. My bet is the bottom end is still good and you just bent valves.

I'm pulling it out today to take a good look at it. It's just too tight on the drivers side to even see the timing marks. What happened was the balance shaft belt broke and got lodged in between the crank gear and timing belt. Turning it over by head feels like maybe 1 cylinder is ok but that's about it. Bent valves would be a real plus at this point.

All have the same longblock and will work, you will have to reuse minor parts from the old engine like sensors and stuff.

Your best bet is to rebuild the engine you have now and if you do it yourself you shouldn't go over 1k in parts/machine work.

Also the timing mark for the cam gear is on the valve cover for these engines.

You can find longblocks on ebay every now and then, there getting hard to find now for some reason but there's a few already rebuilt engines on there not sure of the manufacturers reputation though.
