Ok so I have done a search and didn't come up with much. So here's my dilema.
I bought a 97 gst a few months ago for 1,000 and it ran like crap and wasn't exactly beautiful, but heck for a grand, you realy can't beat it.
Well then I found a 96 gst that had a bad motor but the body was straight and that was for 1500, so my friend and I went half on it, he got te motor and I got the car.
So we swapped the motor and trans from my 97 into the 96, kept the 96 wiring harness and ecu in place, and when we tried to start it, it turned over but it won't start. It seems like the firing order may be different but were unsure as the haynes manual shows the same order for 95-99 for the 2.0 turbo.
We did notice that the 97 motor has the cam position sensor, but the harness doesn't have a connector for it.
If its something as simple as just swapping the harness and ecu then well do that, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in doing this.

Thanks in advance.

only the 1g came with the cam angle sensor. search 6 bolt swap on how to wire it in and how to order the spark plug wires.

1gentalonfan, you are not correct. All turbo dsms have a cam angle sensor, differences are that the 1g cam angle sensor does both the cam and crank angle sensor's job and it is adjustable whereas the 2g's have a cam angle sensor and a crank angle sensor and the cam angle sensor is not adjustable.

Now, infinite kaos. I will try to help you here...

The 95 and 96 cars have the cam angle sensor on the intake cam gear rather than the other side of the cam. I am not sure how the connection to the sensor differs between the 95-96 and 97-99 but one thing i can tell you is that when people do dsmlink in non 95-96 cars using the 95 ecu, they have to swap the plug wires.

A 97 engine in a 95-96 cars would be the same as putting a 95-96 ecu in a 97+ car so ill take a wild guess and say that you just need to swap the plug wires.

i assumed he meant the cas on the left side of the engine like 1gs have.

Well I swapped oiut the engine wiring harness from the 97 to the 96 and it started, but then it stopped. The 96 has so many spliced dash wires its not even funny. So today me and my friend are gonna tear apart the dash and fix all those wires, and hopefully, everything will work.

Ok so we removed like 3 pounds of useless wires, one thing we found good was a turbo timer set up with the plug and play harness, but we removed it anyway to eliminate any problems. The car started right up but died right away. Its running really really rough, and won't go above 3k rpms, we tried unplagging the mas and the rough idle went away, but it wouldn't go above 2100 rpm.

Could a blown coiupler cause this problem, or could it be the ecu, or the fuel pump,I'm gonna swap the fuel pump and recheck all the intercooler connections to eliminate these problems.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated especially from spomeone who has had similar problems.

I think you are doing way too much work for such a small issue man....swapping the whole harnesss???? F that.

Did you try the firing order first? Also, yes, a leaky coupler can do that...boost leak test!

Any check engine lights?

Well sure enough it was the intercooler piping. Coming from the j pipe elbow to the straight pipe to the u pipe.

I guess my friend and I both assumed that the other tightened that one.

Now that I think about it it makes a lot of sense for it to be that and I should have checked the piping right away.

When we first started the car it was running perfect so we put it back in the garage to put the rest of the car together and when I backed it out to test drive it, it ran fine. It wasn't until I started heading down the street that I heard the loud pop and then that's when everything started.

So problem solved, thanks for all of your input.
