:dsm: Ok ive been trying to find a decent DSM 2G for about 5-6 Grand. I found a 95 GSX with just north of 100k miles. It has a few mods that im worried about and my dad is worried about. It has a 16G** Turbo, custom Magna Flow Exhaust and a Greddy BOV. It is a loaded car with manual transmission, leather, cd, and its silver. Do you guys think this car as dependable. I dont and my dad doesnt like cars with modified turbos? What do you think? Thanks For The Help. :dsm:

16J? I think you mean 16G

Honestly, your best bet to make sure the car is in good condition is to do a run down check of compression, turbo (shaft play, leaks, etc.), suspension, electronics, etc. etc.... You can find just a standard inspection checklist online relatively easily. If you aren't mechanically proficient then do yourself a favor and take it to a mechanic and have them take a look at it and check everything over for you. It might cost about 75-150 to get it evaluated, but think of it as protecting a possible 6k investment.

And these cars are NOT known for their reliability, especially when modded.

Yea sorry that question was one that really couldnt be answered... sorry. I think im gonna wait for one without mods being ones with mods most likely have been driven to hell and back. Thanks for the advice/help and putting up with my noob question.

look for one that is not modded, if any modding of the car is done, let it be you that does it, or a expert garage. That way you know what you have. I prefer a car that hasn't been modded, kinda like a artist with a blank canvas.

Amen! Its just the matter of being patient in finding one in my area. Michigan isnt flooded with eclipses/talons. Being 16 years old its hard to be patient when buying a fast/sweet car :p . Thanks for the advice, this site is great!

Heh, I hear ya, I was 16 when I bought my 92 Talon TSi AWD (112k miles, 5 speed, and just a K&N filter and a 2g exhaust mani), but...I got a crapbox, bent intake valves, chewed up balance shaft belt, the whole shebang, and my engine is still apart, half of it in the garage, and the other half of it still in the car, heh. I paid 1700 to get it back to my house which was 150 miles away, and Im going to wind up spending 300 on a valve job and 750 on all new mitsu parts. So figure 1400 plus 1400, comes out to a grand total of 3100. DON'T do something stupid like I did, and that was only a month ago. LOL!

just check the turbo for shaft play, to be honest man, if its your first car and stuff and you looking for reliablity i wouldn't go with a dsm. Also if you would like to keep your licsense i wouldn't get one eather, because your buddy's will say get on it beat that guy then you see blues and your screwed. My dsm is my play car it only goes out every now and then, and the cops go by once a week now that they know were i live.

Don't be stupid and street race and listen to stupid people. Problem solved. As long as you're responsible, you won't have to worry about losing your car/license.

i would pass..there's nothing better than getting a stock car and making it better your OWN way as you mod it, but thats just me.

My records clean due to the fact i didnt drive my eclipse when i started driving, every young guy who has his license starting off f*cks around, comon man i know you did when you got yours.

Just saying buy it and keep it a project car till you can speed and not loose your license:D

but you could loose the car after that still.:notgood:

If you don't want a car thats been driven hard and done so often you shouldn't be looking at buying a turbo dsm or a sports car for that matter. You are lying to yourself if you honestly think any of these cars have been putted around their whole life by little old grandmas. Now as far as this particular car goes find out for sure what has been done to it. If you need to, try and find someone locally who knows about dsm's to go with you and give the car a once over and verify what has actually been done to the car.

As far as the 'mods' done to the car, replacing the leaky factory blow off valve with one that can hold more that 13 lbs of boost is not really a bad thing, would you worry about it if it was just a plaind old 1g bov instead of a greddy? Replacing a restricting factory exhaust is not really a 'mod' that would frighten me away from the car either. As far as the turbo well thats your call as to whether its a bad thing or not i guess, personally i would take a near new 16g over a 100k mile t25 anyday. If this car was stock for the same price would you be even considering not taking it?

As far as dependability goes, all i am going to say about this is, treat the car a good as your going to drive it. If your going to drive it hard and do nothing maintenance wise be prepared to break things and have a lots of down time. Take care of it, perform regular maintenance and it will be just as reliable as any other car. Not trying to tell you to go and get this car but just trying to give you another point of view. Good luck with whatever you end up choosing.
