I am just finishing rebuilding my head using only the best performance parts. I got the Comp Race cam set and I was just wondering why most places say that only the exhaust cam gear should be changed on a 95-96? The only thing I could think of is the fact that the cam angle sensor is right there. What if I change over to a 97+ style cam sensor? I will be running DSM Link either way. Any ideas guys?
Thanks

Yeah, Im sure they say that because of the 95-96 cam sensor on the intake cam gear. Are you running a 1g or 97-99 head? If so swapping on a different cam sensor is mechanically easy, just have to do a little wiring differences.

95 intake cams are not drilled for the "non-95/96" cam sensors, you will need either another cam or to have your cam drilled and tapped.

well what confused me was he is asking if the exhaust cam GEAR needs to be changed... reread his first post. Anyways if you are talking about the sensor then just drill and tap whatever intake cam you have if it's not already drilled and tapped. No biggie.

P.S. What reason do you have for changing the sensor at all??? You aren't doing a 6 bolt swap ( at least you didn't say you are ) so whats wrong with your stock sensor? Just drill and tap the cam if you can't order it predilled / tapped.

Actually I am installing the FP2 cams in. The reason that i need to replace the sensor is it got broken when i was taking off the original cam gears. How, I dont know but....I'm using a 95 head. I'm not doing the swap because I tore the engine out to do a swap...and come to find out the bottom end was redone with performance parts not too long ago. The guy I got the car from only had it for about 2000miles and didnt' know that.

Nevermind guys..i just ordered the new sensor and will have to stay with the stock intake cam gear. I guess i didn't explain well enough. Sorry...

Most of the power is gained from adjusting the exhaust cam anyway..
