92 laser head question

Well I am working on my buddies laser and I took the valve cover off to see this...(check picture) Has this happened to anybody else. The engine will turn over and sputter but it wont start. Any suggestions on why this happened and what else may have been affected like a valve hitting a piston or??

if the rocker fell out?!?!!? then no the valve cannot hit the piston because it will stay closed, as long as it did not appear to conflict with anything else moving around he is very lucky..... the question is how did it fall out! I have never seen that happen.

Also, as long as it was on the intake side, you should be alright. Just put that puppy back on.

Yeah my friend hasn't done any mods so he isn't running crazy power or anything, He said his water pump died so it overheated. He the replaced it. A couple days later he was just going up a hill and he had a loss of power, didn't drive it for the next year. Now I am trying to get it going. Hopefully it isn't more than just a good tune up and putting everything back together.
