92 awd auto - possibly bad tcu?

well i have another trans delima, my cousin has a 92 awd auto, the problem.

car takes off from a start fine and sometimes not, sometimes it will shift 1,2 and 3rd will just neutral out, if you floor it it will shift fine but then neutral out again some times it will start off like its in 3rd or 2nd and when you get up to speed it will JERK HARD into 1 or 2nd gear it will then not shift at all, i took the tcu out and it stays in the "limp mode" 3rd and does none of that so i dont think its the trans, im just wondering cause this is the third tcu this car has seen and the other tcu's just burned out and never did this, the thing is going haywire.

ok so i found this site - TCU Codes - and ran a check for codes on the tcu and got,

52-2nd Gear Incorrect Ratio
54-4th Gear Incorrect Ratio

what does this mean as i dont know alot about auto transmissions.

You are slipping so much that the output is wrong. You should be doing 40mph but you only doing 30mph cause your transmission is not locking the different planetary gears all the way.

i plan on taking it to a trans shop in the morning to get a better insight on wth is going on, damn autos im glad i dont own this car anymore but i feel sorry i sold it to him.

will a 91 awd auto trans, fit a 92 awd auto, i know in manual's it will but auto's are like spanish to me i dont understand it.

also the codes i posted in post #2 what is the fix for that, what is needed, and how difficult, how expensive.

Yes, they use the same W4A33 transmission. As for the codes, Im not sure. It does sound like a TCU problem, though it could be a shift sylenoid.

Have you tried swaping TCU's with a known good one just to be sure?

if i had another, no junkyards or anyone here have autos, the old tcu burned out i replaced it with the current one and it worked fine for 3 months, then just outta nowhere it shifts like.

1 good
2 nothing
3 good
4 nothing

he has to drive it with O/D off so it stays in 3rd.

but i might have a chance to get the ''only'' auto trans in my area and its a 91.

I was having issues with my auto shifting sporadically or not shifting at all. The tcu had tested good and no codes were present. At the time I was desperate, but came up this and costed less than $30:

Although the shifts were harsh, they were fast and consistent. Your auto tranny will now become beast capable of handling some abuse. I never had another tranny issue and eventually swapped to 5spd because I got a good deal on the parts. It creates 100% line pressure shifts. You really have nothing to lose and if it doesn't work, then your tranny is really shot.
