hey guys. im getting some mixed answers on this..

im told that to swap an auto from a '92 into a 91, i will need to swap the xfer case as well, due to different splines?
but im also told that i dont need to worry about that, and that the 92 will bolt right into the 91

both are turbo awd autos of course.

lemme know

count the spline of the output shaft of the tranny on the 91 if it is the same count as the 92 tranny output shaft :thumb: then you are good to go!

well, that would be all fine and dandy.. but id rather not buy a trans i cant bolt up ;)
the 91 still has the trans in it. it still runs and drives. were just lookin to replace the tranny in it due to it flaring up on the 2-3 shift.

so, your answer really didnt help me too much. hehe.

what exatly areyou trying to do? your post says you are wanting to put a 92 tranny in a 91 and keep your tranfer case ? if that is the case then all you need to do is count the spline on the tranny output shaft that goes into tranfer case if they are the same then you can use your either transfer case if not then you must use the 92 t-case. also since you want to get smart with someone who is trying to help you,do you know if the 92 tranny is a converter lock-up tranny? if it is,it has a xtra soloniod for the converter lock-up feature that your 91 wont have a plug, possibly causing you to shorten the trannys life anyway....have fun buddy.... :thumb: hehe

see now thats more like the kinda answer i was looking for :) shoulda just said all that the first time ;) sorry for being a smartA..blame it on the severe lack of sleep LOL. i see now that based on my post, your original answer pretty much answered what i asked, tho i was expecting some more in-depth answer really. again, blame it on the severe lack of sleep hehe. anyways..

yeah, we (the guy buying my car and i) are looking at replacing just the trans in the '91.. which is currently still in the car of course. all i seem to come across, are '92s. you say to count the splines, but we have not removed the trans or xfer case on the '91.. and i dont think either of us intend to unless completely necessary to make sure the '92 trans will work... unless you can count the splines without removing either? (havent really looked so i dont know)
dont know if its a converter lock-up tranny or not.. neither person ive talked to about the trannys has mentioned it.. so i dunno. will have to ask. any way to tell just by looking at it? lemme know

thanks for the help.. thats more answers than ive found/gotten so far, and its greatly appreciated.

edit- from my brief searching since making this post, ive seemed to notice that all the '91s ive come across were 23spline? would it be safe to assume my '91 also is a 23spline, or is there a good possibility its a different spline?
is the difference on the spline count, related to whether it was a 6/7 bolt engine?

ok.. heres what the person from dsmgraveyard.com said:

none of the 1g turbo trannys use lockup
the lockup trannys were for non turbo only
all '91 up trannys were 23 spline

that sound right to anyone else? if so, that makes me gettin that '92 turbo awd auto trans so much easier and i wont need the xfer case.. right? :)
