Ok, I recently picked up my first DSM. I thought my engine and rear end would be pretty cut and dry, because manufacture date was JUN 91 for a 91 model car. It appears to have NO performance modifications ever and has only 116,000 miles so I would hope nothing catastrofic has ever happened (IE: the rear should not have needed replacing)

So I go to check, just for fun, and find that I do indeed have the 6-bolt engine (oil pan flares out a bit, not in). No surprises here. Then I look at the rear end and see 4 bolts at the back end of the drive shaft. Unless I mis read this means I have a 4 bolt rear, no?

On top of that I have ABS!

Is it possible someone replaced the rear at some point or is this an out of date manufacture deal?

Also, will the ABS cause any conflicts? I know there was supposed to be a conlict in 90-91 which is why they offered LSD or ABS. If there might be problems I would be inclined to try to disable ABS, because I never liked the feature anyway.

Thoughts?

I don't think it was a conflict with ABS/LSD as much as just a different option package. Maybe the rear end had a problem in 92 and was replaced under warranty with a 4 bolt.
Someone else may know for sure on the ABS/LSD thing, I would be interested to find out whey they were never offered together also.

First of all let me congratulate you on your purchase of a dsm! If I understand you correctly, you have 4 bolts on the back of the rear differential on the opposite side of the driveshaft? Look where the axles come out of the differential. A Four-bolt has four bolts and a three-bolt has three. Also a four-bolt will have larger diameter axles than those that a three bolt has. All 90-91's should have a three bolt rear.

I wish you the best of luck with your DSM!

The 3 bolt and 4 bolt rear end refers to the amount of bolts that hold the axle ends to the hubs. All DSM's have 4 bolts connecting the driveshaft and rear differential.

Ah, I see, that makes much more sense. I do have a 3 bolt rear. So much for my great mystery. I thought it was odd that they would ever use 3 bolts to connect the driveshaft.

So much for my hopes a having a LSD.

Thanks for the welcome though. I'm a little paranoid about Mitsu Turbos, because I've had 2 grenade on me, but when I saw this one for sale I just had to get it. They're an anomoly in the car world, and that's a good thing! :dsm: :talon: :laser:
