91 Tsi FWD Tranny, Grinds in 3rd? ??????????

ok i got a 91 tsi , my tranny started to grind in 3rd constantly, now its starting to grind in 2nd if i shift hard, also it think i can hear something rattling in my tranny, cause when i put it in gear it goes away, anyone got any suggestions? im on a tight budget as of now, should i try and just find a used tranny around here for like 3-500 bucks?, or just try to rebuild it myself? if i need to rebuild, do i need to take the motor out or drop it down to get the tranny completley out?, also has anyone actually rebuilt thier 1g fwd tranny successfully?

I would get it rebuilt. I got mine rebuilt for $900 from a local guy who rebuilds dsm trannys. You can rebuild it yourself but it will probaly cost you more. It takes a lot of tools that you may not have. Before do that, I would bleed and adjust the clutch. That might fix your problem. Good luck.
