Saved a 91 tsi awd from junkyard. The car had a blown head gasket, torn timing belt and no compression. Took everything apart put new valves, seals, cams, valve springs, new head gasket, shaved the block and the head, and a new timing belt tensioner.. Did everything by the book, the car cranks but does not start. Checked the fuel pump and it looked liked it came out of titanic. Got a walbro 255, new fuel filter and cleaned out the tank . Crank the car no start.(compression is perfect) Chacked the coil pack and put new spark plugs....no start. Looked inside the fuel rail and its dry. Cleaned all the fuel lines put new hoses. Now im getting fuel to the fuel rail but no start.... Put new fuel injectors and i know that they get power to them, crank the car and ...no start.... I got compression, fuel, spark, and the timing is set right. When i use starter fluid it starts for a sec and back fires.... What can be causing that? Any suggestions will be apreciated. HELP!!!

If you have fuel, spark, and compression,it should start. Are you positive the timing marks were set right at the oil pump sprocket, crank sprocket, and cam gears? It doesnt hurt to double check. Pull the return line after the rail, and see if fuel is present. If the timing is off it can cause it to backfire.

yeah i checked like 10 times already. What if my vacumm lines are connected wrong can that be causing a problem?

It dosent look like there is fuel to the return line. But when i take the fuel press regulator off... i got fuel coming out of the rail...

I have the same problem with a 255 walboro also. i have a new motor in there and im cranking and I know im getting fuel becasue i can hear it through the lines. I think my problem is that im running too rich and its flooding the motor. ### il crank with the fuel pump on and nothing but when i turn the pump off, its sputters once. I put the ecu into another car and it idled at 2000 rpm. im guessing this is my problem, but it might be youra as well. do you know if your ecu is good?

If there is no fuel in the return line, You may not have enough volume or pressure. Pull the vacuum line off the regulator and see if there is fuel in the vacuum line. I have seen cases(Never on a DSM) where the fuel is pissing out through the vacuum line on the regulator into the intake manifold, Flooding the engine.
Are you positive the fuel pump is running? As far as the ecu, Take the cover off and visually check the caps for leakage.

im positive on the fuel part, it gets to the rail when i crank it. i guess i will have to check the ecu and see if anything wrong there. But it should still start up..... at least for couple seconds.

for the ecu, take it apart and see if there is any crap that looks like it doesnt belong around the capacitors.(they look like silos, 3 of them i believe in middle front) I was told if they are bad, they will send the wrong amount of fuel and cause it to flood out. Im getting a new ecu soon and i will see if that is the problem
