Got a new 3 inch turbo back exhaust. Detonated while actin stupid.. Blew the rings in piston 2. Having motor pulled.

Ok guys. Is there anything I need to really look out for when I have the motor out? I have a couple of grand to play with and Im looking to get 12s out of it. Should I go with Ross, Wiseco or even a 2g piston upgrade? Are the 2g pistons a drop in or does it require an over bore? If I go with Ross, can i keep my existing rods? I hear its the way to go. I wanna drop in an ACT 2600 while the motor is out and also thinking about doing the kevlar belts.

Well guys any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would just go with Ross pistons and Eagle Rods:thumb: If you get 2G pistons, I believe they "drop" right in...someone correct me if I'm wrong. The 1G rods though (90-mid 92) are good for around 450hp.

Thanks for the replys.. Im looking to get 12s out of the car and maybe 11's but I would be happy with 12s. Its not gonna be a street legal car. I have a 95 gs-t as a daily driver and the gsx is my play car. ;)

I'd like to go with Ross pistons. Seems they are more cost effective. So I do have to have aftermarket rods to mate with the Ross? Those eagle rods are really expensive. Which brings me to another question.. Whose got the best deals?

stock pistons and 91 rods have taken just under 600hp many times.

for you to run 12's, you'd need about 325hp.

I've got cooked rings. I need to rebuild the motor anyway. I would like some protection against detonation so I would like to go with a slight upgrade. Can I fit Ross pistons on my stock rods? Im just finding out that the head is shot so I need to start looking for a new head. sucks.

protection against detonation wont come from engine internals, rather proper tuning.

stock pistons have gone just under 600 hp and havent been pushed farther. they are believe to go much further. why in the world are you insisting on ross pistons in your 300hp car? just rebuild with stock stuff.

i dont get it. why such overkill. its rediclous.

How much HP is your engine producing? From your profile it looks like a stock bottom.

Make sure you use total seal piston rings or something equivalent, I would go ross pistons and stock first gen. rods.
chris.

OK guys, stop bickering! I have deleted all of your useless posts…

Georgie2577,

How did you determine that you have “detonated your rings”? That is not a very common thing to do on our motors.

In ether case, building a race motor to run 12’s is wasteful. Most rebuilt motors end up worse of than factory. The best option for most people who whish to run 12's is to go with a used/JDM motor. Those are good for low 11’s or even high 10’s.

hello

I had just installed a 3 inch turbo back exhaust and took it out for a good run and it must have boostcreeped but the next thing I knew was alot of oil had come out of the dipstick.. Not the usual blowby.. There was lots of smoke coming out of the dipstick at idle.. Did a compression check and had 159 - 89 - 159 - 159.

Thanks for your help.

That could be the piston/rings. But you probably destroyed the cylinder wall and will require to bore them out.

I will reiterate, that if your goal is to run 12’s, you would be much better off with a good used/JDM motor. Building a motor THE RIGHT WAY costs a lot more than $2k (unless you have a very good/cheap machine shop at your disposal). You can back on the road, running 12’s with $800 used motor.

I have a 6 bolt I am building now. I was just doing a standard rebuild, with no balance shafts. You would be surprised the power u get get out of a good head job, so I was plannin on massaging that. I am looking to get low 12s. With a fuel system and put the car on a diet, I should be there
