When I bought my car it would not downshift into 2nd. Swap new tranny in.....

UNFORTUNATELY, I got ripped off on dsmtrader for 250 bucks, and the "perfect" tranny I bought and drove to Indiana to pick up will not go into first. The gear is completely ####ed up.

I am about to burn this car.

How hard is it to swap the first gear and syncro out of my old tranny into this new one? Do I need special tools other than snap ring pliers and shit like that.

As always any advice is greatly appreciated.

It's not exactly the type of work you'd do in your driveway. Swapping gears requires a press and/or bearing separator to get the gear stacks apart along with a handful of other hand tools. Plus there's a bunch of differences between years in the trannies as far as the internal parts go, so it's really dependant on what year tranny you have and the donor tranny.

That being said, have you checked other things like the shifter arm on top of the tranny (they're different between the early and later trannies). Is the tranny from a 90 like your car? Also, have you verified it's not something wrong with the clutch, etc?

With the clutch disengaged, it goes into first but when I let out the gear strips. Nothing there. Every other gear goes in fine. I take off in 2nd and drive around fine.

I swapped the output shaft from the 23 it had to 22 for my tcase. The guy said it was from a 90, but he also said it was perfect so #### him.

I have access to a press and various pullers. And a bunch of different size races to press shit, and some specialty tools just nothing crazy. I would like to hear from someone who has swapped a gear out of the gearset.

If it had a 23 spline output shaft it was either not from a 90 or it had been swapped out at some point. Make sure the shifter arm is the same as what's on your old 90 tranny. If not, that could cause you to not fully engage in some gears. You could also try to disconnect the shifter cables and manually put the tranny's shifter arm into 1st gear to try to isolate the problem. Here's a link where people describe this problem in more detail:

Here's a link to the tranmission rebuild manual if you want to go that route.

Just adding a little.

Before you dig in completely, check your shift forks. one of them could be bent, enough to screw your 1st gear up yet still give you other gears. If the previous owner of the tranny was a hondashifter then that could quite well be the case...

If you are going to switch parts out, you will not need a very serious press for the way your problem sounds. Because of it grinding like that, usually indicates the synchro completely distroyed, believe me if the gear was gone, you wouldnt be driving it. If you didnt know what is is,its basically a crown looking ring attached on you gear or splined you the first gear shaft.
