Last year I acquired a 1987 Mighty Max that my 16 year old son, who is really into formula drift and all things cars, could fix up and have some fun with. He’s been drifting ever since I souped up his power wheel to 24v😂.

Anyway the truck was running but had a bad knock. I had planned on scraping whatever 100hp pos motor was in there and throwing in a newer Evo motor to make it a good looking street/drift tuck. I started getting into it and it is in-fact a RWD SOHC 4g63 n/a narrow block. The block is in great shape crank not so much, spun #4 bearing😂. I would assume that the balance shaft belt broke long ago and it was slowly starved of oil until, well, you know.

So after realizing what I potentially could get out of this little beast of a motor y’all call a DSM
😏 I want to rebuild if I can with a stage 2 1g DSM DOHC from dsmparts not sure if that one will fit my 1987 block since everything I am going to order is for 1990 Eclipse I’ve heard yes if this and no if that. For the lower I was going Eagle forged 100mm stroker crank (already bought it for a good deal) was going to go with Manley rods pistons bearings from STM Tuned. I’m looking for around 400hp…and a few hundred tires.

The block is at Simmons machine shop here in Charleston SC, he says the block is in great shape and to “go big or go home”

I guess I’m asking, Will this work? Also need help sourcing wiring harness, tunes, intake/exhaust/turbo manifold so that it’s not all backwards. I’m also looking at project zero for some advice on transmission options.

This being my first start from scratch build, I would appreciate any and all advice and help I can get. I know it’s going to take a lot of time and money, but it’s going to be hella fun working on it with my boy before he goes to college in 2 years and also sharing the build with this community.

Close. 87 2.0 is a g63b motor. I honestly don't know what differences there are. There is some information on this site I'm sure. I don't think it's as simple as adding a DOHC head.
I've owned an 87 new and they don't use a hydraulic tensioner but I do think you are right that is's a narrow block so that trans may bolt up to a 4g63 block.

It definitely doesn’t have a fancy hydraulic tensioner but my block does have 4g63 printed on it not g63b I don’t currently have the block so can’t double check. I’m hoping that all oil galleys line up and so on so it won’t ruin all my pretty new parts on the first pull. If not I should just start looking for a 1g block. I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to worry about motor mounts and that stuff but it seems a may have to move the motor forward a bit anyway.

You have probably already figured this out but yes the g63b block is just the predecessor to the 4g63 the blocks are identical to the na 4g63 blocks the internals I’m not so sure on I’d definitely swap cranks anyways not worth risking it
