Hey guys, I'm getting all of the parts ready to put my car together. I just bought a 97 4G63 block. I already have the internals from a 95 block. So I'm trying to find out what the major differences are between the 2G 7 bolts. Which years use the thrust bearings, and which ones use the split bearings? Will everything bolt up from the 95 to the 97? And is there any meaning to the casting numbers? Do they give you any info on the block? Thanks, Cj.

The difference is something to do with the thrustbearing. The 97 is better. The only difference is internal. Im not 100 percent sure but if i had to guess i would say that the block and main girdle are the only differences and must go together. I wouldnt be surprise if the block, main girdle, and crankshaft had to go together.(saying that they arent interchangeable)

Thrust bearings, several differences in the head and oil pan. 7 bolts also have a crank position sensor.
I'm not looking for the differences in the 6 and 7 bolt engines, I'm needing to know the differences in the 2G 7 bolts.

Some 97s have the revised bearings so you just have to find if the block does or not. The only way to be sure is opening it up.

I just bought it as a bare block. Is there any way to identify which bearings the block uses?

Well... I guess I'll have to find out the hard way, I'll be happy if it lasts 20k miles, it isn't going to be a daily driver, and it will eventually get a 6 bolt, just after I get it running first.

The only real difference is the thrust bearing design. Also be sure to change out the oil jets. They are like 50 or a set, but well worth the money.

I have a 98 GST the got a GSX swap and my 98 7 bolt did not have the 3 piece bearings. As far as I know the 99 7 bolts had the 3 piece (half) bearings as oppose to the 1 piece(half) in the 97-98. I built the 7 bolt with the 1 piece halves and the motor lasted 1000 miles. The bearing thickness was off but that another story. As far as the bearing if it a 99 block it uses the 3 piece (thrust wahser) halves and yours more than likely uses the 1 piece (halves) bearings.
