What do the 7 bolt 98 and 99 engines have that is stronger then the rest of the 7 bolt engines? And how does it make it a stronger engine? If anyone could let me know would be great, thanks

they aren't really stronger, just a different thrust bearing design.

There are slight differences but the truth is they are pretty much the exact same. It's mostly sensors that go with the motor that were changed.

As far as the mechanical aspect as far as I know the only real difference is the new trust bearing design.

... (oh, and never rebuild a 7 bolt, because they will almost 100% of the time get crankwalk after that)

if you let this ^ person rebuild your engine, this is probably the case.

crankwalk happes when you wear out your thrust bearing, or pump metal shavings through your oiling system.

Or in my case try to extend the master cylinder rod too far to compensate for not stepping the flywheel correctly. (yeah, back in highschool I walked a 6-bolt)

late model 7 bolts had an updated thrust bearing more resistant to abuse.

But this must be made perfectly clear: 99.9% of crankwalk on any car ever can always be traced back to improper maintenance or a botched install of a clutch.

Another statistic you have to consider is late model 2G's looked FANTASTIC, where early 2G's look....downright ugly. A good looking car will on average be taken care of better...its just human nature.

If anyone needs to be schooled on crankwalk shoot me a PM, I am the subject matter expert on this.

I'm done being an a$$hole, but seriously people, dont say stuff if you are only guessing or parroting back what you heard from so and so, chances are they are wrong too...

The normal thrust bearing has the thrust surface built onto the main bearing, the split thrust has a seperate thrust bearing.

He was referring to your comment "Never rebuild a 7 bolt as 100% of them will crankwalk"

Care to elaborate on this, I'm dying to hear.

I let a friend get on to get some posts up and he puts this B.S. idea that cranks walk 100% after a rebuild.........sorry about that:(.....well I guess it helped the community know a good rebuild will fix this issue.
Also, does anybody know why Mitsu only went with a split thrust bearing for the 98/99s rather than trying to make it way less suceptible to crankwalk?

May want to start hanging out with people who actually know what they're talking about instead of people who sign on to your account behind your back and make ridiculous claims which earn you negative reputation points.

Thread's now cleaned of (18) posts which were nothing but B.S.; any further off-topic posts will result in a closure.

My stock 98 motor was pulled at 100k with no scoring at all on the cyl walls. Had 160psi too. It still to this day runs in a friends 2g with over 160k on it and it makes 350hp. Crank walk is mysterious, many people sneak away from it, normally it is cause by aftermarket pressure plates in all cases, NOT mitsubishi's design..

^ What the hell does this have to do with the differences between 98 and 99 7-bolts versus the others?

Some of you guys.
