So after scouring Craigslist, Tuners.com, Talk.com, and any other DSM related website for a stock 6 bolt short or long block, I have come up with 2 likely possibilities.

1st Possibility
- I have a gentleman that has a full complete 6-bolt 1990 laser NON-TURBO 4G63 with everything, from the intake mani, head, valve cover, cams, gear, head internals, exhaust mani (obviously won't use this), short block with original rods, new OEM NA pistons and rings, polished crank, new ACL Rod and Main bearings, new NA oil/water pumps (if theres even a difference), I mean everything. The block has been bored out .040 over and the head and block has been resurfaced.

All of this for $350. 3 hours away.

Now after a few hours of searching forums I know for certain that all NA blocks don't have oil squirters. Also I know for certain that the pistons are weaker than its turbo counterparts.

What I'm not for certain, due to contradicting forums and a bunch of "it might, it should, I think so" responses, is whether or not its worth taking the NA turbo build route. The questions I have regarding this route is in reference to certain parts that would HAVE to be changed.

I know of the typical things that would have to happen when swapping a 6 bolt in a 2G. I do have the option of doing the 1G Block with 2G head too. Not sure yet, I'd like to do the hybrid long block as of now. However, what additional items need to be changed due to it being a NA block. A few of the items I'm uncertain about include:

Water pump? (NA water pump worthy, 1G Turbo water pump?)

Oil Pump? (NA oil pump worthy, 1G Turbo oil pump?)

Cams? (Definitely using HKS or BC cams when building. Any info I need to know of?)

Oil Pan? (NA Oil pan, 1G Turbo oil pan?)
Oil Squirters? (Just need some more clarification and reassurance. I understand it doesn't come with them. However, its a 50/50 split in which I've read whether or not they are a necessity or just a luxury. I do plan on building the block for 400+ HP. It'll be my DD until I purchase another DD then it'll be my weekend warrior/strip monster. :thumb: I know its possible to have them installed, but is it worth the machining/parts cost? Any additional info about the squirters I need to know about?

Any other parts, concerns, complaints or comments about completing such a project??

2nd Possibility

A '92 6bolt turbo long block with no oil pan, cam gears, cams or sensors. It comes with everything else though, all pumps, pulleys, bottom end internals, head internals, etc. But it too has been honed, resurfaced completely. This for $400. 4 hours away.

Thank you very much in advance for helping me out!!

How close to drop in ready are you looking for?

On the first, it will have the pistons swapped out. I would say you need the squirters with the stock cast piston in a turbo app. The factory did not spend the extra cost of putting them in there for no reason. But yes the engine will run with out them, depending on the driving style and tune, the engine could be shoret lived with out them.

If you have a Turbo oil pan then use it, if not you can install an turbo oil drain line on the NA pan.

Installing the 2g head on a 6 bolt block is simple as reaming the head bolt hole to .500

Also keep in mind that you will need a new flywheel for the 6 bolt

The 2nd engine, the cams are out, so check to make sure the cam tower caps are with it, if they are not, the head is scrap weight.

Just beacuse the head/block have been surfaced, do not count on it having the proper finish.

IMHO, neither engine sounds like that good of a deal when you factor in travel time and gas expense.

Thanks for your insight! The NA block comes with the flywheel too. Its not going to be a immediate drop in. It'll most likely be built all next year and hopefully ready for swap by next winter. So the piston issue and flywheel issue will definitely be fixed with new parts.

Regarding the oil squirter issue, I was reading that as long as you have forged internals, oil squirters are more of a luxury. But stock internals its a necessity.

EDIT: Itll be a 1G head on a 1G block. Just made my decision. If you took out the whole gas expense and travel time, what do you think?

I understand that the larger ports on the 1g look massive. But since this is going to be mainly a DD, you may want to reconcider the 2g head for the low end, or get the Cyclone Intake for the 1g head.

From the way you laid out both engines, neither really seems all that good due to the amount of work needed.

With out pics of the engine(s), and some idea of what and how the machine work was performed, I would be leery of both.

You plan to build over the next year, and it seems clear you want a 6 bolt swap.
With that in mind, you can start on stacking some parts, and still look for a good core engine.
You can get parts like the con rods, gaskets, cams, valve springs, timing belt kit just advoid buying parts that may need oversized such as the crank bearings and pistons/rings.

I agree with it possibly being more work than I expect, so for now Ill put the $3-400 into some parts that would be universal for any 6 bolt block. Its just Ive been looking for a 6 bolt long block for so long that was somewhat local. Realizing it now, it would be an impulsive purchase that I might regret later on.

Thanks for your help and keeping me level headed with my impulsive thoughts. :)

Just keep looking, when the time is right, the right deal will fall in your lap.

Keep checking around.
