What is a 6bolt? I hear people saying that they did a 6bolt swap, and i know the standard is 7, but what is that and what exactly is the difference? Please explain...

P.S. New to the DSM world.

Welcome to the DSM world :thumb:
I'd suggest learning to use proper grammar and spelling, using search before asking any ol' question, and filling out your profile with your vehicle info so we can help you better later on. Learn how to use VFAQ,

Onto the question...

6 bolt and 7 bolt refers to the bolts on the flywheel. 89-92 had a 6bolt flywheel, while 93-99 have a 7 bolt. What the 6bolt swap refers to is putting a 1g engine into a 2g DSM because the 7bolt isn't as reliable and strong as a 1g. The 2g suffers from a disease known as crankwalk. It can happen to all motors, but is prevalant in the 7bolt DSM's. The 93+94 1g DSM's had a 7bolt in them, but it was just as strong as the 6 bolts.

The reason the 7bolts are weaker... well, there are about 12094821 different hypothesis', but what I have seen is that the motors were engineered down for quicker response and to be lighter. Thus, it was also weaker.

Magnus Motorsports published their own theory about it, and they are one of the top-notch companies in the DSM world. I'd trust them

not all 92s have 6 bolts though. Only ones with a build date on or before 5/92. The rest of the 92s were 7 bolts.

I disagree.
They both have their pros and cons, but yea 7bolts are most likely to "crank walk" but there are ways that seem to pro-long that from happening. Since crank walk is due to the thrust bearing on the crank going out, try to use your clutch as little as possible (Like shift into neutral when coming to a stop and take your foot off the clutch), use the clutch switch mod so you can start your car without the clutch pressed in. My GST lasted 130k til the #1 rod or somethin in the #1 cylinder gave out, but it most certainly did not crank walk :)

Its all in your tuning as to how long your motor will last, reguardless if its a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt.

I have seen some 7 bolts over power 6 bolts time and time again so I dont believe they are "weaker"
