6bolt and 7bolt heads?

so i sent out a head to get ported(6bolt) and while it was gone some of the cam journal caps got damaged so i took some off another head i have(7bolt) and was going to use them on the 6bolt head. Now i notice that the 6 bolt head doesnt have the little guides that sit in the counter bores on the caps from the 7 bolt. Does the 6bolt head not have these little round guides or did they get taken off while it was away getting ported perhaps? this is confusing but if anyone could help me out itd be great.

Six bolt heads have those guides in the head. Sounds like yours went missing. Are you going to get those caps line bored before you reinstall everything?

i would never use cam caps from a different head.

Using cam caps from a different head is asking for trouble, don't do it. Why didn't the machine shop send yours back? I'd be asking some serious questions of them at this point, if they can't even ship your head back to with everything that it went out with.

i took the caps out before i sent the head. my girlfriend (ex now) threw them on the floor of her garage. so i need new ones. so now what do i do?

You either take it to a machine shop and have them machine the head and whatever caps you want to use, or you get a new head.

can i use the caps from a 7bolt head on the 6 bolt if i get it line honed? btw they are brand new cams if that makes a difference

You'd have to get them line-honed and have the caps and their respective seats (don't know the proper term) machined so they fit together. I'm not totally sure if you can use 7-bolt caps on a 6-bolt head.

ohh man damn...If I would've logged on earlier I could help you out with some caps.
I just got a new head, and sent the old one as a 'core charge'.
I trew the cam caps, and cams so it would fit easier in the box and less shipping charge.
bummer....
As far as I know you can't use 7 bolt caps in a 6 bolt head...I tried using 6 bold head caps on a 95 GST head and the cams had some serious play after reasembly.
