5w-30 or 10w-30 for breakin ?

just wondering what oil everybody uses to break in there motors... and what they run afterwards.

unless you have built this engine for 15w30, I would use 5w30. Just because someone knows a guy who uses 15w30 doesn't mean that you should. Our engines were not made to run that thick of an oil so I would use what is recommended by the dealer. Just me though.

It's also common concurrance that using synthetic oil to break in a motor is a bad idea. Synthetic is too slick and hinders the piston ring seating process.

okay so i just bought 10w 30 oil thinkin that that was what i read in another post somewhere on here as to what we are supposed to use to break the motor in. should i take it back or can i use this oil i have. by the way it's castrol gtx 10w 30. need to know cause i was plannin on doing my oil change right after work today

You should use regular motor oil for the breakin stage. If you start with synthetic oil, I have heard (but haven't seen it) that it can make seals prematurely go bad.

yea im pretty sure we both have regular oil and not synthetic, but im wondering which weight to use, 5w-30 or 10w-30

I bought a stroker block from SBR and they sent me some instructions with saying to break it in for 500 miles with 20w50, and then again for another 500 miles with more 20w50 oil. they said it sets the rings faster. anyone have any thoughts about this?

Especially with the heat during the summertime now. Turocharged motors generate a lot of heat. 5w-30's viscosity is too thin.

used 15w50 in my stock 2.2 s10 , no problems ever happend .. also used 15w15 in my 1st stock dsm, again, no probles .. so as long as someone is asking for recomendations, i will give it

Break it in with mineral oil 10w30. (1000kms)

If you want to switch to synthetic you may do so around (5000kms)

i remember reading that the first number is only the viscosity during startup. So after 10 minutes 5w 30 and 10w 30 will be almost the same. Is this wrong? i still have 5w30 in my car from winter and its hot summer now.

NEVER USE A SYNTHETIC OIL during break in sometimes it does not allow proper breakin. I buidl DSM for people on a regular basis and I always use a non synthetic oil for breakin any engine builder will tell you this. I use castrol gtx for first 500 miles then switch to a synthetic

use the cheapest 10w30 oil you can get your hands on. Like stated don't use synthetic. After 500 miles change the oil and filter. after 500 more miles change the oil again. then switch to whatever 10w30 you feel like.

yeah im just using some cheap vavoline oil...

and im doing 50 100 250 and 500 changes
with changing the filter every time.

got 110 on her now so gonna change it tonight then go drive another 150 miles

just use convetional JUNK oil and oil filter. Run it after a couple hundred take off the filter, cut it open and check out the inside make sure you dont have any fairly large metal chunks or small animals. after about 1500-2000 switch to synthetic (mobil 1)





^ this is what I've been told/shown to do. It was even on project supdog when those twins on the discovery channel built a 1000+ hp twin turbo supra

how the heck you suppose to cut an oil filter without getting metal in it ? and starting it on fire ?
