Can I buy this trans and not have to worry about spline count? My shell is COMPLETE minus motor and trans.

I have a 1991 TSI AWD 5speed shell. I am confused about this """""spline input shaft, t-case, dif. """" thing that I have heard about. All i heard was I need a certain trans because of this "spline thing" ??? Is that true?

There is a trans i could go get right now but I am unclear about this "spline" thing or whatever it is. I have searched the subject on here and the posts I read confuse me more or end up not even being about the question I have?

So can I buy this trans and not have to worry about spline count? My shell is COMPLETE minus motor and trans.

Wtf are you asking? What model year did the trans your looking at come out of?

I will repeat. Can I buy this trans without worrying about this "spline" thing I have heard about?

To answer your question. I do not know at this point what model year the trans I am looking at came out of. I did not think it matter what year it was long as it is another 1st gen awd trans

Theres two different spine counts. (21 or22 can't remember which off hand) and 23. The 90's had a the smaller spline. The small spline goes with an aluminum headed transfercase, and the 23 spline goes with an iron headed case.

However, all the parts related to this are interchangeable, so if the cars has been worked on who knows what it is. You just need to count it and see what you have and what you need.

Most times when an early trans is rebuilt a 23spline shaft is put in it, as the smaller one isn't available anymore, and the Iron head case is stronger and more plentiful.

Also, the late 2g t cases are not interchangeable, they will bolt up but the ratio in them is wrong, they have to stay with a late 2g trans.

Finally, the shift levers for a 90 trans are different than a 91+. You can make them work, it just takes some finagling.

The tran's have a vin number stamped in it on the bell housing, it will tell you what it should be.

Can you read ? I have specific question marks placed very strategically throughout my post. I know this is a hard concept to grasp but a "question mark" means the sentence sitting right before it , IS A QUESTION.

I will repeat. Can I buy this trans without worrying about this "spline" thing I have heard about?

You didn't provide the model year that the tranny and xfer case are coming from. All you provided was the year car u have. As explained above, the transmission and xfer case must match in alpine count or they will not work

Well yes I can read, how ever it looks like a 6 year old meth head organized and typed these thoughts. Congrats on your specific question marks though.

The spline things as you so elegantly put it must match. You need to count how many splines are on your stuff and compair to what you are trying to buy.
