I have a couple questions about timing on my 420a. First off i am thinking of buying a mechanical tensioner, is there any advantages or disadvantages to using it compared to the hydralic tensioner. Also I bought some AEM true time can gears used an my question is what should the timing ajustment bolts be torqued to.

A mechanical tensioner can be a good investment, the primary benefit is that it is a part that will theoretically never fail, and the only real downfall in my opinion is that you have to be more careful when setting up timing. With the solid tensioner you will have to check the tension of the timing belt since it will rely on how much the bolt is turned one way or the other. And AEM should be able to give you that spec if no one knows it right off hand.

Is there any particular reason you want to run a mechanical tensioner? The only reason I can see running one is maybe if you are reving the motor really high. Otherwise the stock hydraulic one works fine.

Once you get used to a solid tensioner, I believe it may even be easier than a hydraulic one. Just a few different tools. One difficulty of using the hydraulic tensioner is compressing it if you ever have to remove one to be reused, that is if you cannot stick a pin through the hole to hold it in place.

If you need to buy one either way, there should not be much of a price difference. I believe through the dealer a hydraulic tensioner is around $200, a solid tensioner is probably even a little cheaper.
