420A Swap

Hey guys need a quick question answered here. I have a '96 MT NT Eclipse and my motor basically needs to be replaced. A friend of mine has a motor from a '98 AT NT Eclipse. Would this be a big pain to replace with my motor or can a few parts be bought or swapped out from my old motor to make it mate up with my MT? Thx for the help guys

If your swapping just the longblock, it should be farly straite forward. I beleave the 96 and 98 420a use the same computer and wiring harness.

Oh ya, the flex plate and clutch from your car should bolt right up the crank on the other 420a. If I remember right there are a few parts on the AT block that you will need to remove befor you install it. I can't remember what they are though.

Just a thought but if you have the money I would invest in new interners, head work, clutch, etc. while the engine is out. Assuming your going to boost it in the future.

Does your 96 have 2 plugs in the ECU? Make sure it does otherwise if you have an early model 96 your ecu's won't work right, and you'll have to rewire.

Shoot, thats right. Thanks BigRand-for some reason I was thinking it was the 95 that could be one or the other.

Take the motor. It will work. Forget all this static about wire harness and sensors and shit. Your car has sensors in it now, right? Right. Do these sensors connect to your current harness? Of course they do. Are you replacing your ECU and harness or the motor? Just the motor.

Remove your 96 motor.

Take the 98 motor, bolt the flex plate from your old motor to the crank. (Consider a new rear main seal while you're at it, clutch would be something to consider as well.)

Install the 98 motor.

Install all your original sensors into the "new" motor.

Connect the harness.

Drive that bi***.

My first rebuild was a 95 block into a 97. You're using the motor, NOT the electronics.
