Heres the scenario. About 2 weeks ago I went to hop in my Eclipse gs, and it wouldn't start. I figured the battery might have been dead, maybe I left a light on whatever you know? So I went and grabbed my battery charger and charged up the battery. The car started right up, so I let her idle and let the alternator charge up the battery. Now nothing happened for about a week and it happened once more. Hopped in the car to leave and bam once again she wont start.

So I charge the battery again, start the car and let her idle. Except this time, after idling she shut off by herself and then wouldn't start. I then charged it again and let it sit for at least 20 minutes. This time it ran fine for a few days and nothing came about. I ripped my entire system out of the car (stereo) and sure enough I hop in the car, she starts fine. I get about 5 minutes away from home and my RPM"s just drop to zero, MPH drops to zero and the car is still running, except NO acceleration.

I pull over, turn the car off and sit there. I waited about 5 minutes and she wouldn't start. Called up one of my buddy's and had them bring a battery tester and to my surprise the battery is ABSOLUTELY fine. Same with the alternator. No more then 10 minutes pass and we both heard a weird electrical sound chirp in the engine bay and what sounded like the fuel pump kick on. Right after I heard the noise I started my car up and she fired right up, I went straight home and parked it. I have no idea what could possibly cause a motor to do this, I am hoping someone on here might have had a similar problem or something along the lines of what is going on. Please give me some feedback as to what could possibly cause a car to do this. Thank you

Man I was in your same spot, driving like 75mph in the fast lane on the freeway when my shit just shut down. No one would let me over either.

What you gotta do is charge your car up again, then take off the charger and get out the tester, see if there is a draw on the battery, and if your voltage goes down. You might have to do this within like a half hour period.

Re check your ground wires from your battery. And make sure there are no draws there.

And last but not least, check your EGR and make sure there are no wires touching that.
(see in mycase a ground wire for my battery got exposed and actualy grounded itself to the egr. It would work part of the time but then shut off again.)

Thats what worked for me.

This is a good idea. It could be a short somewhere draining the battery on you.

How do you know the battery and alternator are fine? I'm not thinking it's really related, but there is a possibility. At first I would think alternator, but once it's done, it's done. There is no more charging the battery or getting a jump at that point.

This does happen. I had a buddy ground out the redtop in his trunk because his hot line came into contact with the EGR pipe and shorted. Damn near blew up the battery in the trunk. (And it looked funny, me giving him a jump through the trunk on the side of the higway.)

Same here. Those bastards. My problem was the fuel pump shutting down. I wired up a kill switch on the pump and my connections weren't the best so I removed it and rewired it up stock. I would just unplug the pump when I got somewhere, and the clip got weak and failed.

I would also pop the panel under the back seat and check the connection to the fuel pump. You lose that while you're driving and the car will just die on you. It's a terrible feeling. Ugh. I just got my car back on the road last night for the first time since August 3rd and we had to resolder a new plug on back there since it tried to bite me in the ass again. LOL.

Let us know what you come up with.

Late.

Also check out the ground strap coming from the firewall. Had a similiar problem with another car when my ground strap broke. Everything ignition and computer related was dead, but the car would crank and lights and stuff would work.
Hope this helps.

I had the exact same problem.. it turned out to be the ecu.. very common i hear with the 95 gs...

Holy cow this thread is old...but yes, 95's are notorious for ecu's taking a dump

Does your battey light come on while your drivin, after u just charged it?
Check the fuse box and look at the big square 120v altonator charging fuse. Mine went on me and gave me all kinds of greef like the safc2 shutting off loss of the rpm and spedo.

PS Not a cheep fuse eather 20 bucks.

I'm sorry. Did you read this thread? Notice how old the thread was? I would hope that, nine months later, he's got it figured out.

that would suck if he didnt.. i had a similar problem last year too.. turn out the wires connecting to the battery were bad, so i had those replaced and no problems ever since.
