420A HP Increase?

2k isn't that much.. If you think 2k is alot to spend on modding a car you need a new hobby.

As far as I know bullet is the only respected n/a 420A I have seen, and he has a lot of time, effort, and money into his car. Not to mention some bad ass driving skills. I would say if you just want a little more power to impress your lady friend once in a while a 75 wet shot is probably what you want. ( you'll also need the supporting mods for that such as a bottle heater, window switch, etc.. which adds up also)

I say this because it seems to me the turbos that come in the kits aren't as efficient at the low boost you can only put on the stock 420A. If your going to get a turbo kit, you might as well build the motor so you can take advantage of it

That is just my .02, and by the way I have seen stock block type-s' in the 13's which is fairly respectable for a 4cyl n/a stock block.

Just about everything you said is either hear say or just flat out WRONG!

One If you look at my mod list I have more than 2k into my car but I go off what the OP's looking for not what I'm looking for. If he had money out the ass to just drop on a turbo kit he would be asking something like which turbo kit is for me or he would has specified that money isn't a factor.

Two how what about all motor mike? What about the other guys running low 14's with out turbo's or nitrous? Have you ever seen Mark drive? If not how do you know he drives so good? I'm not saying he doesn't but you talk as if he goes to your local track.

Third and most disturbing is your nitrous comments. You don't need a bottle heater window switch or any of that stuff it's all extra stuff that's made more for your all out guy then someone looking for a hp goal. A zex nitrous kit will get a 420a owner 200whp with just a basic kit nothing else. f you did want that stuff even at dealer prices as in brand new not from ebay or used dealer you would still only be at about 100 bucs for a kit with a purge bottle opener bottle heater and window switch. That's half the cost with everything under the sun.

Boy it's amazing how far ones thread can go, and then it seems like it becomes some form of political style debate. I read and understand the decisions that every owner goes through on how to do a performance upgrade and how far to take it. Not everyone has the funds to build there cars in the performance levels as the next person.

The reason for my thread was to find out if I could get the power that I wanted out of my stock 420A without going to any great extrems. It shows me that bolt-ons will only get me so far and that Nos will get me to my goals without further mods. This brings me to my next issue of choosing the proper reliable brands to build it up with.

bullet until resently I had never heard of OBX brand. I see that you have used a good number of their products on your car. So how are they for quality and performance, how well do they hold up over time?

Slippi, after reading though your 7 posts in this thread, I could say you are wrong. Most of what you say is opinionated or ignorant. Settle down buddy you are pretty defensive considering no one was even talking to you.

-Nitrous is best bang for buck: ( Heavily debated )
---Nitrous costs $5/lb here. Common tank size I'd say to be 20lb so that is 100$ a fill.
(10 tank fills * $100) + $1000 for the proper set-up ( ill explain why I suggested the extra safety parts) = $2000.

Looks to me like you are at the price of a turbo kit and now when you fill up the bottle again you lose your advantage. 93 octane is .20 more than regular here, so about 3.40 tops extra for 17 gallons of gas. Which not to mention depending on how your car is daily driven you will receive somewhere near 30mpg ( how many miles do you get on a bottle of juice?..), also a turbo can make the car MORE gas efficient. Also I clearly stated "I would say if you just want a little more power to impress your lady friend once in a while a 75 wet shot is probably what you want." which means if he isn't going to the track all the time it is more cost efficient, and there is no way to misinterpret that. If he is getting a nitrous kit to go street racing, I doubt he will have preplanned it, thus he wouldn't know when to run 93 or just regular. When some other street racer revs at him you think he will be like " man you just wait till I finish this tank and get some 93 octane!" No he is most likely going to want to use his new toy.

-You're statement "We're not ricers cough cough honda guys we're dsm owners."
---That statement is just plain ignorant. No need to explain.

-Bottle heater, window switch, not sure why you mentioned a purge that is just pointless for most cases.
---You posted as though you have experience with nitrous so I assume you know about how bottle pressure can make a HUGE difference in how much more power you'll feel when you're spraying. Its just plain dumb to spend the money on a kit so you can use it half assed. I mentioned window switch, and should have wrote WOT switch also instead of just etc. I assume with your knowledge of nitrous you know what can happen when you spray between shifts?

let's see what else..

-The whole comment about spending money and 2k being a lot
---You said " Not to mention you 2k is a pretty penny." YOU wrote that... You didn't say " Well he doesn't want to spend that much" or " 2k is more then he wants to spend". Your statement makes it sound like you think 2k is a lot to be spending on performance mods for a car. I honestly don't know or care how much you HAVE spent, that was just the statement you made.

-Ill give you the fact that I missed AMM , but honestly you made yourself just sound dumb when you questioned whether bullet was a good driver. Its not that I know him personally its pretty much just common sense that with his time slips, videos, and over all experience he is a good driver. Just because I don't know him doesn't mean that when I was researching N/A 420a's I didn't read about him.

And what are you a zex dealer... There are plenty of other kits out there that he should research and decide which he wants.

You started out this thread fine, you went wrong when you said all your opinions were the end all be all, and everything I said was wrong.

But this is going to get closed anyways like most of these threads do so In Before The Lock i guess..

And 1999eclipsers : I hope my previous post was something you were looking for.

OBX; the great stealers of our times. They basically find a design and make a knock-off of it. They are generally cheaper (less expensive AND cheaper made) and have lots of flaws. The question is how much the flaws will affect the performance and longevity. And what can be done to massage the part into something worthwhile.

So yeah, I've used a couple of their products. Just wanted to see for myself how they worked out. I'm currently using both their Intake Manifold and their LSD. Both require modification to make work properly. A couple of links to each;

2GNT.com - OBX_Intake_Install
2GNT.com - OBX_LSD

along with a continuing thread; Team 2GNT Forum - Viewing topic #6773 - OBX LSD

As for the rest of their products, their reputation, unfortunately, precedes them. Not the best quality, longevity or fitment.

The honda comment was a joke notice the cough cough. Your dreamin if you think your getting 30mpg but even if you are that $3.40 will add up trust me. Not to mention that the average guy with nitrous only goes threw 3 bottles with a 75 shot because the need to spray is never as high as you think. How do I know? My last car before going dsm was a 87 Supra w/ turbo and spray. I used 3 different nitrous kits(NOS, Venom, and lastly and the best ZEX) That's why I say what I do about nitrous and the ZEX kits. Both the ZEX and Venom kits have built in WOT switchs by the way so worrying about sparying while shifting goes out the window.(Unless your using NLTS but that's a whole nother beast that is more for turbo guys) Like I said I'm not debating or claiming mark can't drive but you talk as if you've seen him drive in person. Every comment I made was from experience. I have experience with nitrous and turbo cars and even both on the same car. Can you say the same??? If not then :

3. Don't try to help if you don't know the answer - bad advice can be worse than no advice (no "I think" or "I guess" or "I've heard").

To the OP my view points are NOT the end all be all just my experience. That is one thing I will agree with he said do research and find out what's best for you.

Mark I thought you were using that new style manifold that mike made or was it you made mike a manifold to use on his car:confused:

OK so OBX products for the most part are cr*p. So what would be a good way to go for a header dc sport, pace setter, greddy, n power, brand x from e-bay? And as far as nitrious goes I need to research it further.

I don't know why you all aren't getting 30mpg at this time of year? Here where I live I'm paying $2.91 a gallon, and putting a bottle of lucas octane boost to raise my octane levels. It has shown its value in its increased performance.

I'm not trying to bring ofense here, but please dude, SEARCH.

More then enouh reputable members have given you their input and even links to this stuff, yet you still ask questions that shows absolutely no effort to research or even search things.

I meen, you're asking questions that are all opinionated and you want a direct spoon fed answer. DO A SEARCH. You've got two pages here of shit people are trying to help you with yet again, I see no effort on your part to answerthese yourself.

DO A SEARCH, or research. Jesus I can't belive there's a two page long thread on this when you can search and find hundreds of them..You have any idea how many people come on here asking what brands to use and how to make more power? There are threads of them on here absolutely everywhere. Read. This stuff gets so old.

Now you listen I've been doing alot of research long befor I even found this site. I'm sorry that you feel that I have not. If I wasn't so serious about upgradeing my performance of my car I would have never have signed up to this site for answers and a**hole remarks. It's only people like you who make diffacult.:dsm::dsm:

Yeah thats what they all say when they don't search. :thumb:

Here, I'll prove that you could've found ALL these answers by searching... be back in 2 minutes with links..

Here's link to 4 pages of header performance alone- http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/search.php?searchid=3936020 typed in 'Which headers?' when searching...

Here's another link to 3 pages of thigns related to more power from the 420a with BOLT ON mods. Typed in 'More Power' when searching... http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/search.php?searchid=3936022

Here's a link to 'HP gains' for the 420a.. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/search.php?searchid=3936044

All of these are for the 420a BOLT ON naturally aspirated application.

Last but not least the write up our respectable moderators and Wisemen created for the new car enthusiasts in relation to upgrade paths..
Tech Guide: 2G 420A Power Upgrades - DSMtuners

Sorry to seem like an asshole but I don't think you realize the time, effort and work the site moderators put into th search feature. ALL of the questions you may ask can be found or answered in the above links I'm more then positive about that. They do it purposely so anyone with any question can refrain from a new thread and find their answer accordingly..

I gotta go finish up my dash and wiring good luck with your findings boss...

He's right. If you have been searching before this, you can't tell. It is obvious that you are new and we want to help, but for those of us who have spent hours a day reading for years to figure out the right setup for us, members who don't want to put in there own work become frustrating to help. Also it looks like 2gnt.com would be a nice place to spend some time researching.

As far as headers go, don't buy one from ebay they will crack. Don't spend the money on Greddy or some big japanese name, because all you are paying for is the name.

Paul or someone please just lock this the missinformation is getting out of hand and turbo guys are making comments that don't apply to NA cars like ebay NA headers don't crack it's the turbo ebay headers that always crack. Like blitz said you have a good start and some good opions wether I agree with some or not you have them now do a little more research and you should be set.

I will look at these sites you have listed blitzeclips. I don't have much time to further research the site for this info myself being a young family man. And I agree with slippin right now the turbo owners should butt out unless they have prior n/a experience. My questions our my wanting to know from other dsm owwners experiances with the brands they have chosen and what has been the best bang for the buck. Being the fact that I now know that I will not be able to reach my goals without some further expense than what my plans were originally.

Mark I thought you were using that new style manifold that mike made or was it you made mike a manifold to use on his car:confused:
Kinda a sore subject right now. I'm hoping I got it worked out.

I want to give the intake the proper chance on the dyno. Without a part that someone was going to make for me, I don't want to test it. A lot like Mike is not inclined to pump these out, until we see some numbers on it. I'm hoping after this last contact with the fabricator, we will see a little cool stuff for our cars. It's kinda sucky right now, because it is literally holding up my other projects because of the logistics of the parts (another long story).

The fabricator is a very smart individual, he apparently just got caught behind in other things.

IDK, does that make sense?

No LOL It sounds like your talking in circles but in a nut shell sounds like the fabricator is holding things up long story short. That's how i goes though with dsm's something is always holding up the program.

Rofl, You act as if you know anything about me. I have experience with boosted cars, and also with nitrous. My previous car was a boosted saturn sc2. If you have any idea on how much of a pain in the ass boosting a car with no after market support and 90% of the stuff you need, you will have to fabricate then you would know it takes a little knowledge about what you are doing. I started with nitrous before I went to boost. Settle the Phuck down buddy. Im not sure how you think you know how much mpg my car is getting but I got a best of 35 mpg from Virginia to Minnesota and a low of 29mpg. I know the only true way to get mpg is fill the tank until it runs out of the end, and then run it entirely dry, but I gassed up a 1/4 tank each time so my numbers aren't that far off.

Im not sure how you think me saying if he is only going to use the bottle once in a while, then it is a better choice is any different then what you said about how he is only going to fill the bottle 3 times. So where were you going with this? All I was doing was explaining how there is a breakpoint between which is more cost effective. And where are you getting this " the average guy only goes through 3 bottles" data. Apparently your experience of only using 3 bottles is what everyone is doing? Sounds like a pretty big generalization to me. I also used the ZEX kit and had no problems with it. I would recommend it as well, I was just pointing out how a lot of your statements were opinion based.

Oh and by the way, 93 is $3.00 a gallon here not $3.40

Oh and please feel free to post more rules for me like I don't know them. Just because my post count is lower then your has nothing to do with a) My knowledge of cars and b) My experience with car forums.

That rule doesn't even apply to this thread because the question has no definite answer. Whether you feel turbo or nitrous is better for him is strictly an opinion based answer.

I have no problem with comparing "e-penises" with you as I am sure we both have as much knowledge as the other, but when someone tries to tell me their OPINION is right and my similar OPINION yet worded differently is wrong, I find the need to reply.

END

P.S I can't wait for your reply. You're so close to 20 posts in this thread might as well keep going

Wow everyone needs to relax. It is topics like this with replies like the ones that have been supplied that make searching for help impossible because nothing makes sense and everything contradicts everything.

First of all, stop telling the OP to go nitrous. At least to me it sounds like he wants the car for street use, which IS NOT LEGAL WITH NITROUS. Unless he is building a race car your just asking for trouble, also it has been pointed out that although nitrous is the biggest bang for the buck it is still not overly cheap.

Next, IF YOUR ENGINE IS IN GOOD SHAPE then you can either

A)Add bolt ons, they will make your car quicker but not what most people consider fast. Probably good enough if you are already pretty happy with your car and just want a little bit more.

B)Put together or buy a turbo kit. This is not really cheap but will give you the best returns.

IF YOUR ENGINE IS NOT IN VERY GOOD SHAPE such as low compression etc. Then again you have a few choices.

A)Rebuild your engine for NA and throw on bolt ons. You should be able to hit around 140-150 WHP by doing this. This is currently what I am working towards.

B)Rebuild your engine with low compression and forged internals and then go turbo. This will make you the most power BUT it will also be the hardest and most expensive.

C)IF YOU CAN NOT DO THE WORK YOURSELF the first two choices will be way to expensive for returns because shop prices are unreal. Your only choice in this case or if you just don't feel rebuilding the engine is worth it then either sell the car or leave it the way it is.

Hope that helped clear some of this crap up.

wow its hard to believe how some dsm owners can be as ignorant as honduh owners and we're "KIDS" because we choose to modify a 420? id love to see you line up to bulletdsm at the track and see what your almighty turbo can do and btw next time READ THE RULES! before posting ignorant turbos better then non turbo comments

hahaha i wasn't saying the OP is a kid, my comment was pretty broad and vague i guess. PLUS we're talking n/a 420A buddy, just bolt ons. no disrespect to to bullet i completely respect what he has done because he has gone above and beyond the bolt on, but a 13.8XX ET is slower then what i run at the track. i like bullets car and what he contributes to the forum.
okay all mighty DSM preacher, if you wanna call me an ignorant Honda owner so be it. i'm no gonna cry about it like you did.

Murray1 dude you nailed. I see that and have said it before my engine is in top condition. How many of you got your cars as a 2nd owner with less than 50k on the engine. I did on top of that it was an old ladies car and very well cared for. OK OK I'm glotting I know it.

Well I think for the Interest for keeping everyone sain this thread has out lasted it's intended purpose and should be and has far has I'm interested is OVER.....

I just finished rebuilding my 1996 eagle talon esi, due to blown pistons rings. Replaced everything, (bored the block over .20) got a nice kit from Federal Mogul (very rare kit for the 420a's) with aluminum forged pistons, clevite bearings, and felpro gaskets. My car is pretty quick now, I am very happy, I know its not fast, but hell it grabs decent and pulls hard. I have couple of bolt ons also, like cai, pulleys, magnaflow cat conv, full 3" cat, BPP ebay headers, and I am happy so far. I am planning on adding extra stuff like OBX intake manifold and bored throttle body. I don't have enough money to go turbo right now, but I am happy with the way it is.

All good stuff except nitrous is not illegal you just need a permit to transport it in your vehicle very common mis conception. Trust me I ran it in two diffrent cars I have a a permit to have it in my car. Another thing you have to watch out for when turbo charging is emissions. I have seen custom pieced together kits make cars fail the sniff test. I have 99% of the stuff bullet does with the exception however it's the most important part MS. I would not go that route unless your going for a goal oriented car like I'm trying to break the 420a with nitrous record. For the money I spent though I could have went turbo but look for a thread that's called 420a 1/4 mile times and you'll see what I did that made me want to go spray instead of boost.

All motor as is with bolt ons: 120-150whp $300 more

Motor w/ bolt ons and nitrous as is: 120-200whp(anymore your would require more than a 75 shot and that's not wise on stock stuff) $500-$1000

Basic stage 1 turbo as is: 170-200whp $1000-$2000 more

Stage 2 turbo kits: 170-240whp $1300- $2500 more

Add about $1500-$2500 for a built engine and about $700-$1200 for rebuilt stock spec

You can get permits to transport and leave it in your car but it is illegal to use it on the street.

I do realize that if you use it correctly(remember to disarm it when you get pulled over for speeding) that they can not pin it on you. You can not have it armed on the streets though.
