420a first start fml - YouTube

i finally got the car to start but then it idles at 2500-3000 and it sounds like a horrible valve tap or even a possible collapsed lifter? :banghead: iv taken the valve cover off an everything looks fine but its obviously not

any ideas on what this sound may be and how to resolve it???

Hard to tell in the video, but it kind of* sounds like rod knock. It's idling too high to know for sure, could just be lifter tick, but can't say for sure.

What all did you do that you're just firing it up?

total rebuild i needed new piston rings
and i was thinking that at first but it sounds like its coming from the top end
and yea i know the video sucks its off a phone obviously

i was looking at other videos and i found one that sounded just the same as mine and he said he had a spun bearing, which would really suck...

Definitely not the sound of a timing belt jumping. It's either some noisy ass lifters that should clear up once they bleed up (took a week in one of my 4g's even after hand bleeding them) or it's a spun bearing. Have you drained the oil yet?

Also check the OBDII code, I noticed your CEL is on. That should give you a general area of where to start looking.

i just took the oil pan off again and cylinder #3 had a spun bearing so i fixed that and its running perfect though it still has a high idle. so im going to comb through all the vacuum lines to see

im thinking it may even be like a idle check valve or something like that because that would explain the check engine light as well

I'll agree with vacuum leak. Did you replace the intake manifold gasket? I've had bad luck with them before...

Chris

Double check that you don't have the throttle cable too tight when you put the engine back in, i.e. the throttle plate is closed. Make sure you have your PCV hooked up, I forgot that since I was going to put a 4g63 pcv in and my car idled high until I connected it
