I'll shortly be picking up an eprom chip from Nathan Pharr at DSMChips to run my Cyclone intake and some 550cc injectors. I can also have him burn it to compensate for a 2g or 3g MAF. He suggests getting the 3G MAF or a 3000gt MAF as the flow is higher than the 2g.

1. Has anyone else HERE done this?

2. Any tricks to wiring it up?

3. Any problems running it with just the EPROM chip?

4. Doing a search for a 3g MAF I pulled up Diamante's, SUV's and others. Does anyone know exactly which MAF I'd want to grab?

I'm still talking to Nate about it but thought I'd ask around here as well to get some first hand knowledge. Thanks for any help you can offer.:talon:

Yes, this mod has been performed on thousands of DSMs over the years even before EPROM mods became commonplace. I put mine on with Denso 550s and no fuel correction years ago and ran great. Then went S-AFC and calibrated, then Stg3 chip (definitely the best tune).

VFAQ covers all the wiring issues for the 2G MAS, for the 3G refer to Steve's post below
3. Any problems running it with just the EPROM chip?
Nope. The 2G/3G MAS outputs a different Hz signal for the same airflow as the 1G MAS. All the EPROM chip does is re-calibrate the "new" signal so that the correct airflow is used in the ECUs fuel /timing calculations.

A 3G MAF has #482 on it, but a 2G MAS is plently for 400-425WHP. May also want to peruse DSMChips Forum where there is a ton of info already out there on this subject :dsm:

It looks like wiring a 3g MAF is different from a 2g. I couldn't find anything on the wiring for the 3g. I'd like to have that available so I have options when I head to the junkyard.

From Keydriver thread on the GVR4 forum: ( http://www.galantvr4.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Number=172983 )

3G MAF pinout
Pin 1 = +5 volts
Pin 2 = Barometer
Pin 3 = Airflow Hz
Pin 4 = +12 Volts from MPI
Pin 5 = Ground
Pin 6 = Intake Air Temp
Pin 7 = Reset

So, the correct crossover wiring to our MAS plug is:
3G/EVO Pin 1 to 1G MAS Pin 4
3G/EVO Pin 2 to 1G MAS Pin 7
3G/EVO Pin 3 to 1G MAS Pin 2
3G/EVO Pin 4 to 1G MAS Pin 3
3G/EVO Pin 5 to 1G MAS Pin 6
3G/EVO Pin 6 to 1G MAS Pin 8
3G/EVO Pin 7 to 1G MAS Pin 1

This MAS uses a different connector than the 2G (or 1G) so make sure to get the connector when you get the MAS.

The GOOD 3G MAS to find is the #482, from the Variable-Induction V-6. The #482 V-6 MAS flows so close to an EVO MAS that the 2 could be interchanged, and no one would probably notice. This MAS flows 25% more air for the same Karman Hz as a 2G, and 67% more than a 1G, so you have to add a LOT of air on an AFC.

I know, I'm being a pain and confusing things but I was calling around to find a MAS and a junkyard had a #501 MAS from a Galant V6 for $60. Any word on these MAS's? I can't find a definite number but it looks like this may be the same as a 2g MAS?

Never mind. Found a 3G MAS for $70 shipped through http://www.car-part.com

Best search for finding the part was: Air Flow Meter, 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 3.5L engine. Searching for Eclipse brings up all the 2.4L engines too and it's a pain in the ass to dig through.

There's an asterisk by the cheapest price on the bottom page listing. Go one page before that. Best price I found was out of Florida. I had them double check the part #482 on it before buying. I couldn't get a wiring harness plug but I will just hard wire a connection in and add a plug on the end to make it fit the stock harness. The part was also tested, which I'd check with all the potential flood/hurricane damaged parts in that region. :thumb:
