3" 1g awd exhaust out the driver's side?

This afternoon I'll be cutting up and rewelding my home-made (by someone else) 3" exhaust so it tucks up under the car better. I was looking underneath and it looks like the easiest route is actually over to the driver's side.

Problem is, the gas tank filler-spout is over there. I was thinking of just throwing up some sheet metal for a heat shield and calling it good. What do you guys think?

I'll also be welding on a 3" N1 muffler so clearance for that isn't really an issue as there is plenty of room for it on either side.

keep it on the passenger side because if you get rear-ended it will jamb the exhaust pipe into the filler neck and could cause an explosion.better to be safe than dead.

Hmm, interesting point. Hadn't thought about accidents... Maybe if I use heavier steel for the shield...

My problem is that I only have two 90 degree bends to hack up and reroute the pipe with. I'll look at making them cross under the driveshaft instead of doing a 90 right behind the pumpkin.

on my galant I went under the drive shaft.be sure you put flex pipe in because I didnt and now I keep breaking muffler hangers every time I launch the car.

I have 3" exhaust it come out in frount of the rear wheel on the driver side. i think it looks great.

I ended up leaving the exaust routed out the passenger side. I just added two couplers in and made my bends with those instead. It is tucked up under the car great now thanks to GSTinCO's help.

For what it's worth, those eBay N1 mufflers actually sound pretty decent welded up to a 3" straight pipe. It sounds pretty awful at WOT if you leave the silencer in though.
