2nd gear goes in smooth after a cold start up.

I’ve searched for answers on this but didn’t get the answers I was looking for. Ok so my 2nd gear grinds if I go into it fast. In order for it not to grind, I have to go into neutral after first, then slowly go into 2nd, wait for it to catch the gear, then slip it in. Down shifting into it is completely out of the question until I slow down to about 15mph. Now my main concern is that the synchros are gone. But I’ve noticed after a cold start, the gear is SMOOTH. Like, I don’t have to go into neutral, I can just go straight down into it. After it warms up though, its back to the slow shifting. This reason makes me believe that it’s not the gear synchros but maybe just the tranny fluid. I have previously changed my fluid with pennsoil synchromesh and the gear still grinded..BUT…when I bought that stuff, the seals under the caps were torn off already and makes me think that someone just put some other fluid in there and returned it (you know how autozone works sometimes). Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Oh and BTW, is synchromesh supposed to be very liquidy or dense? Thanks

You could try changing the fluid, but at this point it sounds like the damage has already been done. I'd start planning for a rebuild.

I normally use GM Synchromesh on my trannys. It worked wonders on both my 95GST and 90GSX. Grinds went away. Since your tranny doesn't grind when cold, I'd recommend going with the GM stuff and maybe putting in some Lucas like additive (for trannys) to thicken it up a little.

I have the exact same problem with my eclipse I just bought. Someone told me it might be the gear link...??? To downshift from 3rd to 2nd, try bumping first gear first. Works for me.

More than likely such condition is caused by a faulty slave cylinder. The problem comes about from thermal expansion of clutch fluid. A faulty slave cylinder does not have sufficient enough free play to properly retract do to thermal expansion.I would strongly recommend replacing the slave cylinder before anything else.

The reason I say that is because when its cold outside the fluid is thick and will slow down the gears making it easier to line up the driving and driven gears. And no, synchromesh looks very similar to oil. Its a little bit more brown and has purpleish haze to it in some light.

so would a thicker fluid then synchromesh work better when it warms up.

i guess you could call it a cheap fix. the part wouldnt cost that much. but you would have to pull the transmission out and tear it down. at the point you might as well rebuild it if it has quite a few miles on it. so overall no. i agree with what was stated above about the slave cylinder, i had just assumed you checked that. dont know why my fault.
