Those are relays. One of them is the mfi relay and I can't remember of the top of my head what the other two are for.
 
ASD (MPI), Fuel pump, and something to do with the AUTO transmisson, not neccesarily in that order.

I have heard that some cars have the third one and some dont, my '97s with manual transmission has not had it and my wifes Auto does so I presume its related.

It could be that reason. The ASD really could be bad. Thats where I have my kill switch for my car tapped into. The ASD relay could be shorting in and out and cause your car to do. Maybe a bad fuel pump. Or the relay as well. It also looks like your a automatic tranny. So thats what the third one could be for something with the tranny I think.
