I might be buying a block from someone, and his engine was built in 96 so it has the one piece thrust bearing. I know those are more prone to crankwalk, so I wanted to see I could swap in my crankshaft with the 3 piece design thrust bearing just for the added comfort. So would I be able to use my 98 crankshaft that has the 3 piece design in his 96 2ga block?

Since you can't swap the bearings, and the cranks are the same, what benefit are you expecting?

I wanted to know if I could use the 3 piece bearings in the 96 block because those, so I heard, are better with preventing crankwalk than the 1 piece. That would be the benefit, if it would've worked however.

If you're even the slightest bit worried about it, don't buy the block. There's nothing you can do to it.

I hope they keep worrying about it so I can buy 2Gs at dirt cheap when I tell them they probably have crankwalk when they really don't.

Rare mishap right here!

Why dont you just find a complete block, would be easier than trying to mix and match. Especially since you seem to be unsure of it..

I did find a complete block, it's from a 97 and its coming with the crank and pistons/rods. And yes I was unsure, which is why I asked this question, that is the purpose of this forum right?

And I know crankwalk is over hyped, but it still happens, and if it'll happen to anyone it'll be me LOL

I've torn down a lot of 4g63 blocks. It's actually rare to not see visible thrust wear. As far as the crank moving enough to eat the crank sensor and stop the engine from running, more rare.

I 100% agree with you, there will be visible wear on the thrust bearings. However in most of the cases Ive actually read about of actual thrust bearing failure were manual cars with very heavy clutch pressure plates. Our engines thrust bearings weren't originally meant to handle that kind of pressure, hence bearing failure!

The engine he's talking about iis my old 7 bolt. The car never had a problem with the engine, and never showed signs of crankwalk. I told him if he buys the block to get new acl bearings. I don't want to screw him over so I also told him he might want to replace the piston rings. Reason I'm not using the block is because I have a 6 bolt with 12k on it.

Also its a 97 block, which is 2gb. Lol.

Yes but it is not a revised block, that's 98-99 only.

You can have a machinist machine the 95-96 block to accept the 97-99 bearings that's what I am having done on account of my machinist recommendation, the cranks are the same and after the work has been done and done correctly you shouldn't have any problem on reassembly, according to numerous people the new bearing style is stronger and more reliable than the 95-95 but ultimately the 6 bolt is the best block to rock!
